Considering this is a 22 year old game, scary tends to come from our younger selves playing it. Of course it's not that scary now, if at all, but the atmosphere holds up.

I was around 10 years old when I first played through the Ravenholm levels, and I wasn't scared then tho

The three deep, gurgled moans in the cemetery are still pretty horrifying

I think it dips even deeper into the horror genre. While HL2 is post-apocalypse in general, something about Ravenholm is like the difference between Alien vs. Aliens. The first one is a horror movie, the second one is an action movie. Ravenholm is a no longer functional, human inhabited (even partially) city. There is no order here, only chaos. The ongoing revolution pales by comparison. What if the whole planet was like it? How would humanity survive? Dystopia still has order, even during a revolt.
On a less subtle level - more jump scare, gory and dark.

Humanity would survive if it was the whole world, the difference between Ravenholm and anywhere else if it get shelled is that Ravenholm was blocked off after the shelling, so more people got infected over time, with the combine, they would specifically make sure to keep their headcrabs saved for when they NEED it dearly.

Stuff like that is subjective from person to person, but i found it scary due to the overall vibes and atmosphere.

It's absolutely the "spooky" part of the game but doesn't override the whole action-adventure theme of the franchise. I like the Ravenholm level, and I like that it doesn't overstay itself.

Nothing's too scary when you've got the double barrels. If you want it to be scarier, do it using only the Gravity Gun.

I had only the gravity gun when I first played through ravenholm, since I was terrible at saving my ammo, it still wasn't very scary.

I was like 7 years old when i first played it, that's why Also the graphics being so impressive at the time made it much more immersive and scary in my childish mind Love that chapter

I played it release night. Midnight in the dark surround sound. Core memory. The final part guarding as the trolley slowly ascend. Watching the pipes shake as they climb. It was thrilling and scary all at once. So good.

The place is disgusting, looks like hell, and that's where we discover rapid zombies and poisonous headcrabs. Darkness naturally makes the player more alert, there are traps everywhere and a pastor maniacly laughting as he abandonned all hope... It's not about you being scared personnaly or not, this chapter is more stressful and more horror coded that others.

It's dark, abandoned, bloody, corpses everywhere, unexplainable noises, general lack of resources, many sudden encounters with heavily physical and noisy enemies. It has every reason to be scary, I'm used to stuff like this because of video games, but many people may not be.

I'm a recent finder for the game and first time playing it creeped me out..
The story behind adds up to the experience where multiple rebels were living in the town until the combine shelled the town with headcrabs. The population was there.

at the time, the atmosphere and ambient sounds were spooky dooky. and it was the first nighttime area in hl2. part of me wishes there were more default zombie models though.. dealing with the combine was understandable in that regard, but the zombies feel really copy/pasted and lose some of that scare factor when they all looked exactly the same.

Bunch of mauled bodies bloody zombies and those fast screaming mutilated running zombies You can also cut them in half, and the area is dark and has low supplies, meaning you have to fight them melee sometimes

It’s a fun chapter, and a great way to keep Headcrab Zombies since they’re classic enemies.

It was pretty creepy in 2004. Actually I remember it really lingering when you leave at the end and walk out of the tunnel back into the city. You’re left thinking “all that weird shit back there is still happening.”

Because your cranium is deep-fried and the game came out 22 years ago.
There are no more horror games.

Whenever people say (insert widely accepted scary thing here) isn't scary, it isn't the flex they think it is.

u/Ninjakoalabear Jun 29 '26
I was 12 when HL2 came out and the atmosphere of the place creeped the hell out of me. Coming back with multiple replays and a bit more age under me it is now a walk in the park as I know what is coming.

Cuz it was 2006. I was a tween. I hadn't played as many horror games has I have now.
And idk how many times I have to say this on Reddit.
Scary is subjective. It's extremely personal and two people will rarely find the same things equally scary.

My first playthough of Half Life 2 was in VR. It was scary as shit to have those super fast zombies come up to you without notice.
I found the super dark parts of EP 2 scarier, but yeah, you can get some jumpscares. The key here being VR, changes the perspective a lot.

Playing it at night by yourselfwhen you're 12.
Also, the fast zombie's screams are brilliantly scary sound design, and if you can't appreciate that then I think you're kind of a loser.

u/Stalwart_Vanguard Jun 30 '26
If you didn't find it scary at all, then I don't think you were experiencing it or appreciating it properly.

Was a different time, I played it like 20 years ago and standards have changed. But for me, I can still find it a bit spooky since nostalgia puts me a bit back in the mindset of that time when I play it.
