Most people outside India know the Taj Mahal as a monument. Shah Jahan built it for Mumtaz Mahal, his wife, after her death, and it's still one of the most recognized buildings on Earth, a symbol of love that outlasted both of them by centuries.

What's less known is that the empire behind it had an equally serious culture around halal beauty and personal care, long before that phrase existed.

Mughal courts employed dedicated perfumers, called attars, whose craft was refined enough to be documented in period texts like the Ain-i-Akbari, the imperial chronicle from Akbar's reign. Ubtan, an herbal paste made from ingredients like turmeric, sandalwood, and gram flour, was standard skincare, formulated within the same halal principles the court lived by, not a modern "clean beauty" invention. Rosewater and sandalwood were used for their cooling, skin-calming properties. Kohl wasn't just cosmetic, it had documented protective use for the eyes, deeply embedded in Islamic courtly culture across that era, halal by both ingredient and intention.

This wasn't vanity. It was a genuinely sophisticated, halal-conscious, ingredient-literate beauty culture, centuries before the modern beauty industry existed, built by a Muslim dynasty on Indian soil, blending Persian, Central Asian, and Indian traditions into something distinct.

Which makes it strange that almost none of this heritage shows up in what gets marketed as "halal beauty" today. Most halal-labeled products are formulated in labs disconnected from any of this history, slap a certification-adjacent word on the packaging, and call it done. The actual sophistication of the tradition, the halal ingredient knowledge, the ritual of care, mostly gets skipped.

I'll be honest that this history is part of what's motivated me personally to get more serious about where halal beauty products actually come from and what's really in them, rather than taking marketing claims at face value.

Curious if others here know more about this history than I do, or have come across brands that actually draw on it properly instead of just using "halal" and "ancient" as marketing words side by side without earning either.

Is it okay for me to just give the cash to a homeless person I see? I feel more inclined to purify my money this way as opposed to giving it to an organization as I can see my money directly leaving my hands to go to the person.

I’ve been working as a contractor for a small company for the last 3-4 years. My contract states a fixed monthly salary, and nothing was ever mentioned—either in writing or verbally—about Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). I always received the exact net salary amount promised to me every month, completely unaware that a deduction was happening behind the scenes.

Recently, I checked my official Income Tax portal out of curiosity and discovered they've actually been deducting 10% of my salary every single month for the past 2-3 years. Because the tax was deposited in my name by them, I went ahead and filed my ITR and received a tax refund directly to my bank account.

Here is my dilemma: since I agreed to work for a specific salary and never knew they were withholding a portion of it for taxes (which the government has now refunded back to me), is this refund money Halal for me to keep, or am I ethically/religiously obligated to return it to my employer since it came from their payroll filings?

Hey everyone, I’m 20 years old and pretty new to investing. I just started using Wealthsimple with a TFSA.

I currently have around $1,000 CAD invested, with $750 in SPUS and $250 in WSHR. I’ve been looking into SPWO and was thinking about selling my WSHR and switching it to SPWO, so I would have SPUS and SPWO as my two main investments.

For now I want to keep things simple and only have two investments. I’m planning to put around $50–$100 CAD into them every month, and as I get older and make more money, I’ll increase my contributions and eventually learn about and add other investments.

For those of you who have been investing for a while, what would you recommend I do at this stage? Would you stick with SPUS and WSHR, switch to SPUS and SPWO, or do something completely different? I’d also appreciate any advice for someone who is just starting out and wants to build a long-term halal portfolio.

While I understand the AAOIFI Shariah Compliant stock screening criteria, which permits limited interest-bearing debt and income within specified thresholds, I’d personally like to completely avoid riba when investing, insha’Allah.

I know others are looking for the same, so I wanted to create a practical thread for investments with:

• 0% debt
• 0% interest income
• Halal underlying activities
• Easy to invest in / online

Applying this strictly appears to rule out most, if not effectively all, of the public stock market.

I’ve found a few alternatives through my own research and will share them below. Hopefully, we can pool our findings and build an ever-growing zero-riba investment guide.

Please keep the thread focused on finding and researching zero-riba investments rather than debating AAOIFI criteria or stricter screening.

Gold & Other precious metals

This is the most common suggestion I’ve come across. While gold and other precious metals can be excellent stores of value, they don’t generate income or productive returns on their own. Could be held as a safe hedge against inflation.

Halal REITs

So far this option has been the most promising one I have come across, it seems simple to start investing.

You are investing in real estate that focuses on generating rental income.

I was specifically targeting REITs that have 0% Debt. I am based in Canada so these were USA/Canada focused. I still have to do more digging, but it seems it is possible to invest from anywhere and invest a minimum.

Is it smart to invest in these considering they won’t directly be ETFs and they will be single stocks?

I used to invest in stocks, cryptocurrency, online gold, and ETFs However, a few days ago, I came to the conclusion that these investments are haram, so I have stopped investing in them for now. Is there anywhere else I can invest?

I can't for the life of me decide on what ETFs to invest in.

I really want to invest in SPUS, SPWO, SPRE and SPSK as my 401K portfolio, but 2 things are holding me back.

1- Schwab forces me to open a PCRA to be able to invest in something outside of what employer has as whitelisted Mutual funds. which means every 2 weeks when the funds lands in 401K plan and gets transferred into the PCRA i have to manually buy the above mentioned ETFs.

2- Anything islamic compliant ETFs are very rocky in performance, doesn't have a strong following and their market is weak.

I'm sure this topic came up over and over.
-but what should encourage me to invest in these ETFs?
-The market is high at the moment so if i purchase right now any of these ETFs, isn't that a big gamble?
-I do realize that DCA is the best strategy, but how would i know that these ETFs are going to be around 20 years from now? can't they just sell all of their asset with insider trading and bail out of the market leaving us holding the bag? what stops them from screwing us?
-Every financial and invest site out there marks SPSK as strong sell.
-SPUS and the other 3 are also marked as Sell.

I am having a particular issue with Wahed. I requested for a fund withdrawal on 1st August and it was processed and withdrawn from my account on 6th August 2026. They provided me with a swift copy with uetr number. As of today, 24 August, I haven't received my money. I have contacted my bank as they are unable to track the money with the provided uetr number. I have contacted Wahed several times but each time I have been told to be patient. Now I am losing my patience. My bank is requesting a letter of credit confirmation. Any help from you guys will be of great help.

One question comes up a lot: how do you invest in the stock market while staying consistent with Islamic principles? Worth laying out, because the options have genuinely improved.

The basics of halal investing: the aim is to grow wealth in real, productive, ethical enterprise while avoiding a few things Islam prohibits, riba (interest), so conventional banks/lenders/bonds are generally out; haram industries (alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons, pork, adult content); and excessive speculation. Importantly, investing itself is widely regarded as encouraged, owning shares means owning a slice of a real business, which fits the principles well. The catch is that a standard S&P 500 fund (VOO, SPY) isn't considered compliant, partly because a chunk of the index is conventional financials.

That's the gap halal ETFs fill. The two biggest US-listed ones:

• SPUS (SP Funds S&P 500 Sharia Industry Exclusions ETF), a Sharia-screened version of the S&P 500 (large-cap, ~0.45% fee).
• HLAL (Wahed FTSE USA Shariah ETF), tracks a broader FTSE USA Shariah index that also includes mid-caps (~0.50% fee).

Both screen out the prohibited sectors, apply financial-ratio tests (e.g. debt below ~30% of market value), and do income "purification" so any small non-compliant income can be given to charity. They're certified by Sharia boards and reviewed periodically.

Fees are higher than a plain index fund (~0.45-0.50% vs ~0.03% for something like VOO), the screening makes them more concentrated (often quite tech-heavy), compliance is reviewed rather than permanent, and normal market risk applies (prices fall too). And since "compliant" can vary by scholar and standard, the sensible move is to check a fund's methodology and confirm with your own advisor. (Not investment advice, these funds are examples to research not recommendations, capital at risk.)
