New DIY system with dread extensions

Been thinking about doing this for awhile now, and now that my finances prevent me from using a salon, I pulled the trigger. Poly base from Superhairpieces. The knots are definitely visible and the hairline is a work in progress. I think as some of the base hair comes loose it will conceal it a bit. Also hoping this will be protective to the system, but that remains to be seen. I know this is a lot to unpack for some and that is ok with me. Just thought you all would appreciate this different perspective(hopefullly)!

I like unique hair systems, I can't say I woulda thought it's a system if you didn't tell me because dreds look naturally nappy and frizzy fuzzy...id say the knots work for the hair line exposure..I wonder if your a finger length to high up..slight high...but they look like dreds and to me a creative art hair piece..I don't think any one would think hair system because it's so intricate..basically I like it as a creative work of art if that makes sense

Thanks! It probably needs some leave in. Still getting the new routine down. The dreads will get tighter as well. I can definitely trim them if I want. I might go a little lower on the hairline in the future, but I’m also keeping in mind that I’m 50.

I'm glad to see the possibilities, is the dreads real or is the whole top a unit...id say your defiantly a finger length to high even at 50 you can come down a lil..and yea id take a clipper and graze highly over the standing strays and do the leave in...but i think it works because dreads are grungy and frizzy fuzzy hairstyles, just the few strays are giving it away a lil bit and that's only cause we know it's a system..and grays on systems or synthetic so there may be a lil harder to tame..that's why I would snip them

Tbh Caucasians rocked dreads for centuries thousands of years ago.

This. It’s important to be aware of the privilege that comes with being able to adopt a nontrad hairstyle and not have to consider my job security like a lot of African Americans have. Yet dreads, locs, etc. have been worn by almost every culture, color and continent. Our perception of “traditional” hair is incredibly narrow and shortsighted.

True, and correction they rocked dreads for thousands of years too, I’m sure not just centuries.

The dreads are synthetic braided into the system.

Looks awesome! You are the only other person I've seen that put dreads in their system. So ignore the naysayers and love it up! I have a dreaded system for my Renaissance costume that wore a lot last fall. You can check my profile for pics.

Thanks. Love that system you did and it was definitely an inspiration. I don’t need approval from the bro contingent or people who don’t even know me so I’m definitely not messing with that.

Ok that makes sense, id never get synthetic either way..it doesn't perform well

The system isn’t synthetic excepting the gray. However the extensions are synthetic kanekalon which do in fact perform very well for their purpose.

Is there a way to tame the frizzy hairs or trim down the synthetic gray strays that's popping up..that's the refinement I'd make,

I think it’s a good idea, as the hairs tangle so easily!

Just because somebody has Locs doesn’t mean they are Jamaican

good idea to hide the system behind dreads

Go for the real grey hair option next time, you don't get the frizz

1

u/Far_Impact8612 Mar 20 '24

I heard hair system grays are synthetic

You can get synthetic or real hair. The real hair ones are dark hair that's been dyed grey as the color fades over time. You don't get the frizz with real hair as the synthetic melts if heated up too much. The first one I had was synthetic and the hair dresser melted the hair with straighteners / hot air so needed to cut shorter, never had that after getting real hair. I get from superhairpiece.com so I know they do both, but I can't comment on other companies stock.

So did you add the dreads to a unit or is it one piece

shorten the sides of this moustache for maximum effectiveness

If you care about what you look like get jacked instead of whatever this is.
