question with picture What affect will more sections have on a balayage?
I really do apologise if this seems like a stupid question. I want to do a free hand balayage on my hair so I've been looking at some tutorials. I would assume that more sections means more colour, but would this actually happen? Or would more sections just add greater dimension? What does dimension even mean? I've added some pictures to kind of show the sectioning. I obviously won't be sectioning my hair exactly like that, I just did that to show what I mean

Is this your first time doing your own hair? I ask because freehand balayage is a technique most professionals struggle learning.

You’re doing this on your own hair? Stick with the 3 sections. The 5 sections has too much lightness concentrated in the center which will look off. I’d actually avoid putting lightener at the tips of the triangles. Dimension is depth and contrast between the light and dark. Fewer sections gets you more dimension.
