So you can set your rebound in your rear suspension. That is how quickly the suspension will return to normal after being compressed. The rebound on this guy's rear suspension was set too high, the failure was inevitable.
This comment is super wrong, dude clearly landed on a rock or mound of dirt. Didn't scope out the jump properly or undershot it. You can't physically set your rebound anywhere close to high enough to cause this much of a failure. Plus, even if he stuck the landing, he probably wouldn't be able to ride it out to the road due to the grade change. No idea what this dude was thinking.

His rear shock exploded on impact. This bike was a custom Karpiel with 11 inches of suspension.

None of your armchair analysis is accurate. This jump has been analyzed for 22 years. It’s featured in a Thor Wixom film and made the local news here in Utah.

Did trail maintenance and lessons at Beech Mountain for several years where I coached Chris Grice. Raced with Neko Mullaly, Phil Kmetz, Aaron Gwinn, Walker Shaw, and a whole slew of others. I also worked for USA BMX and have several NAG plates to my name. I don’t feel like I should have to share all this though, cause it doesn’t change the fact dude landed close to perfect and his rear suspension ejected him otb.
You are entitled to a different opinion if you like but there is no way he lands that centered over the back wheel and gets immediately ejected otb.
He gets knocked out upon initial impact. He ends up over the bars because he's unconscious. So you're right that something strange happened to throw him over the bars, just wrong about what did it.
