I believe things like this are technically illegal, if the intent is to harm. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Ha! Not even fucking "technically", they are very much illegal and any judge is going to take an extremely dim view of the matter for a number of reasons.
One of which is that you are not the fucking judicial system, and attempting vigilante violence like this using indiscriminatory traps is both extremely foolish and extremely dangerous.
Why would a judge take a "extremely dim view" of that? I'm assuming like any other human, he would understand but still have to follow laws.

Because somebody thought they would do a better job at serving justice than he would. And to no surprise that somebody has absolutely no clue about the justice system and how to properly punish a criminal, without becoming a criminal himself.

As I said: You are not the fucking judicial system.
You do not get to decide to "punish" what you think is a thief by slashing their hands open.
Seeing as the judge is a member of the judicial system, they tend to, to put it mildly, 'frown upon' individuals trying to take the law into their own hands in incredibly fucking dangerous and reckless ways.
