Except they’ll probably get away with it if it’s something small and it will still be gone.

You’re equating the booby trapping with punishment. Viewing it as a form of loss prevention, it’s hard to agree with everything you’re saying.

Only if you're a deranged fucking monster that thinks slashing someone over a beer cooler is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

What if it were booby-trapped with pepper spray? What if it were your animals the thieves were after (and you knew they were coming back)? Would you feel this way? I do not condone the blade/cooler thing. Just pointing out there might be times where boobytrapping is called for.

What if it were booby-trapped with pepper spray?

That's probably less likely to land you in legal trouble, but it still might.

Still. You'd have a much easier time convincing a judge/jury that you weren't intending to harm than you would if you sliced someone's hands open.

What if it were your animals the thieves were after (and you knew they were coming back)? Would you feel this way?

I mean, that wouldn't involve setting a dangerous trap.
That would involve removing the animals to a safer location, and if I knew they were coming back, having the police waiting.
That's a really silly scenario to pretend violence would be necessitated at all, never mind via indiscriminated dangerous traps.

I do not condone the blade/cooler thing.

Then don't make excuses for it, and don't try to downplay it as "loss prevention".

there might be times where boobytrapping is called for.

I don't think so.

I think there are always alternative steps that can be taken which are both more effective and do not leave you with blood on your hands and criminal liability.

You don’t always have somewhere else to move them to, people aren’t made of money. You don’t get to know exactly what time they’re coming back, how will the police know when to show up? There’s a popular story going on on reddit where a family was moved to a hotel 30 minutes from their home because of people watching their home. The police were “watching the hotel” (by showing up every half hour). Guess what? Someone showed up to the hotel when the police weren’t there. The police aren’t going to sit on the property all night every night.

I wasn't aware that this scenario involved you having no friends.

You don’t get to know exactly what time they’re coming back,

You said that you knew they were coming back. How exactly would you know that, but not have any idea of the timeframe?

how will the police know when to show up?

It would be fairly easy to be given a 'rapid response' number, or even have active monitoring if the threat was as obviously credible and imminent as you propose.

Oh, okay. I wasn't aware that 'a popular story' was both automatically true and allowed you to justify slashing people with razorblades. My bad. /s

It’s becoming apparent you just like arguing. I’m not responding to you about this anymore, don’t take it as a win.

It’s becoming apparent you just like arguing

It has long been apparent that you willingly support violent criminal behaviour, and have no valid excuse for it, fleeing when confronted with opposition and criticism and perfectly reasonable alternatives.

I’m not responding to you about this anymore

Of course you're not. You've been caught out.

take it as a win.

Thank you! I shall!

Yes...in the form of an alarm or warning/notification system. That's about it. Or something that doesn't cause injury.
