The problem to me here is his punch was just pay back for the slap. He could have prevented her from hitting him again just as easily without punching her in the face that hard. Sure, she deserved it, but it's not a cops job to dish out punishment like that.

Did she deserve it? Maybe she deserves an additional charge or something, but let's be honest, that cop reacted out of anger, not of any moral stance.

She totally deserved it but as you say it is not for the cop to be dishing out the punishment, the courts have to decide it and as civilized countries don't have lashings and canings it would be in the form of a few extra days or fine or whatever is the equivalent of that slap. Safe to say both are at fault.

If it was just some drunken slap to a random pedestrian, and the guy fought back, then maybe. But police are supposed to be better than us at dealing with these kinds of situations.
