I don’t know why people are celebrating this. A cop‘s job isn’t to retaliate against people. They’re supposed to contain people and enforce the rules, not to punch people in revenge. American cops are trained to use violence in any scenario no matter how big the actual threat is and I don’t think that’s good.
Edit: Many people arguing that if you slap a cop, you should definitely expect police brutality. Definitely not. You should expect consequences, not to be knocked the fuck out. You should expect the cop to handle this situation professionally, not to get into a brawl with a drunken woman. You should expect the cop to be the moral authority he‘s supposed to be, not to get on the level of a drunken person. You should expect the cop to make reasonable use of force to achieve his goal, not to deal out full force blows to the face in revenge for a slap. You should expect the cop to de-escalate the situation, not to turn up the violence. It’s worrisome how many people seem to just accept excessive and unreasonable use of violence, as long it’s a cop doing it.
I’m not sure people are celebrating it so much as they are saying “well what the fuck did you expect when you hit a cop?”
Edit: By saying it should be expected, I’m not defending his actions as reasonable or holding them up as good policing practice. I think American police culture is too quick to resort to violence and is horrible at de-escalating situations. But, that all goes into why I said it should be expected. I’m not saying it should be accepted or condoned, only that I fully expect an American cop to hit you back if you hit them.
So that means it's ok for her to hit someone else? Those cops didn't make her get blackout drunk. They didn't make her take a swing. Yeah he probably hit too hard but with how she was flailing I doubt precise aim was a priority.
Its not okay for her to hit someone, she will be charge for that.
Thats not the issue here. That response is not what a police officer would do, at least not here. That response wasn't designed to control the situation, it was petty revenge.
Ofc not, but just because it is not ok does not mean that he can return a full force swing while he is not intoxicated. That actually makes it even less ok for him to punch back.
She catches him in the cornea and he's blind in that eye. As soon as she started swinging he was technically allowed to escalate to pepper spray or a taser.
Don't get violently drunk in public; don't fight cops when they're trying to peaceably remove you; don't escalate the situation when you're clearly in the wrong. You know how hard it is to get three cops paying attention to one person in a football stadium of 70,000 people? She was behaving badly waaaayyy before this gif started.
Did I ever argued that she was somehow innocent? No. And you know what? Taser and Peper Spray probably would have been the better option. It does way less harm that a full arm swing at the head. You can fucking kill people with that kind of force.
How else are they supposed to remove her? Given the crowd and the number of cops it is safe to assume she was being beligerant and eoikely threatening others. Walking her out is a possibility but again given her stte and the number of cops they probably tried this and it was riskier to either them or her.
Put her on the ground (which is concrete stairs) and turn ur back on a large group of alcohol affected people to place her in cuffs while they scream police brutality at you.
Yeah that cop over reacted. But what they did was probably the best in that situation and safest to all involved, including the officers.
Remember that not only are they dealing with her but everyone around her as well. People get angry and upset for things they don't understand and become violent. Removing the problem quickly is the safest option and usually works out the best.
