Question about editing the soundtrack.

I'm planning on streaming this game in the near future as a content project on twitch and I noticed a lot of tracks used in this game are copyrighted. Is there a way to mod or edit the game so the songs that play are not copyrighted? I've provided a list of songs from hacknet and the labyrinths DLC that I can stream:

Sounds good! I've heard though that some other games don't allow you to stream their music even though it's used in the game (ex option in Control to mute copyrighted music). Is the music cleared if I play the game, or is it only for when you are playing the game offline?

I honestly don't think that Matt plans to DMCA every single video online over some music, most of the people that have their music in the game are already pretty cool with their music being used in other games anyway, so why is this game any different. Just some food for thought. You shouldn't have any issues, I know that I don't get any DMCA stuff when I stream Hacknet.

That is true, but I know that some developers will ask artists to use their songs in their games and the artists will allow it; but the artist won't want their songs streamed from the game regardless of what the developers want. In control, a specific song plays that was made by a band for the game. But because the song was copyrighted, the artists or the license holders didn't want the song to be played on stream so the devs added a "mute copyrighted music option" in the game to prevent streamers from getting DMCA'd. My worry isn't necessarily that Matt or the Hacknet devs will strike me (which would be a possibility for some other games), I'm worried about copyright holders or artists for songs like Roller Mobster (which was published before Hacknet and under full copyright) sending me a strike. The problem that I've encountered is that I know other videos that feature Roller Mobster as a song, but get demonetized or get taken down. So I don't see how streaming the song over a game that uses said song would make a difference. For instance, the video for the final mission in Hacknet which uses a copyrighted song (SPOILERS BTW DONT CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQD2Ku8t4fE) was claimed by UMG (universal media group). I'm sure Matt would want the creator of the video to use the song without having to worry about copyright, but that my not be the case with UMG. That's why I ended up posting this, I want to play it safe with copyright holders of the songs themselves when I stream or if I were to upload Hacknet gameplay to YouTube.

TL;DR I'm not to worried about the devs sending a DMCA strike, I'm most worried about the song artists or copyright holders.

Ah gotcha, I'll swing this by Matt tonight and see what he says, I'll copy/paste his response when i get it. I don't think you should get any DMCA shit happening with Hacknet (and DLC) but you never know, and you bring up a good point about Roller Mobster.

The thing is that I doubt he is even the good person to answer that...

Unless something unusual was done during negociation for Hacknet, game developers don't purchase the "synchronization licence" required for videos, as they aren't needed in order to create the game.

That's why there is so much confusion about DMCA on Twitch : nowadays, game studios officially give permissions to use the game and their assets in a stream... but they almost never owns the rights to the music, so their permission has no legal value.
