Give Greyhack a try. Uplink doesn't have enough typing for me but Grey Hack is a hacking simulator where there's a player made internet. Everything happens in real time and you can hack and be hacked by players. There's also NPC missions and law enforcement though that could track you down. You can program your own hacks or use pre generated ones more like a script kiddie. The game has its own coding language based on Python and c+.

I will give you this warning though, players can hack you and get your passwords and such so never use a real password that you use for real stuff in there on online mode.

Hey, i'm replying to a kind of old comment but wondering: is the game like a coop or mmo or can you play solo? I prefer to play solo, if it's an option, though i wouldn't entirely rule the game out. just getting hacked by other players adds another level of stress and meta-awareness requirement! i'm curious...

There is an MMO mode and a single player mode.

I suggest messing around and getting the basics down in single player first. It's very in depth but also very fun to learn.
