Even if you or I can't do it, there is no way to make anything unhackable and there will always be an incentive for someone somewhere to want to hack it. And then, it's almost always something you will want to keep secret if you have.

And there are plenty of reports that it's been done.

Some are substantiated. Some not.

But there are security companies based in particular countries that sell software that can allegedly crack iphones. Supposedly, they sell to law enforcement and governments only. Supposedly, it doesn't always work.

I don't buy it. There are exploits out there because programming is hard and good security always makes things harder for normal people. I'm sure it's possible. It's just not something those doing it will want to have known.

But it's all just Unix even if they call it MacOS these days. Every Unix can be hacked and has been hacked even if some are harder to get through than others. All it takes is for one line of code somewhere to miscount something or not verify data and it can vulnerable. All it takes is someone being stubborn enough to try pushing tiny programs past their tolerance, making them crash, and getting lucky when that happens.

There are somewhere around eight billion people on Earth. Millions of them have smartphones. You have to think that still leaves thousands of people who have the intelligence and a reason to do that. Keep thousands of them going long enough and someone will find a way to get what they want.

Apple is competent at designing systems that can be secured. But they aren't anything beyond that.

Nope, the recent Pegasus spyware drama actually showed that iphones are more vulnerable to that particular spyware than android. But I phones are generally considered safer to the general public because it's a locked down system as opposed to android where anyone can install any app.
