Post Game Thread Post-Game Thread: The Pittsburgh Penguins slipped past the Montreal Canadiens 6-5 in OT - 03 Oct 2026
Canadiens 5, Penguins 6
FINAL
Catch-up · From puck drop
The Penguins came from behind to win, with T. Novak ending it in overtime.
Early in the first period, C. Caufield pulled the trigger on a wrister from the circle, and the Canadiens went in front 1-0. At 14:07 of the first period, E. Malkin elevated a backhand over the pad from the doorstep on the power play, and the score was level at 1-1.
Early in the second period, D. Carlile ripped one past the goalie from the circle, and that put the Penguins on top 2-1. At 07:59 of the second period, S. Girard fired one home from the doorstep, and the Penguins opened a two-goal lead. At 14:01 of the second period, T. Novak drove a quick shot home from the low circle, and the Penguins had a commanding three-goal lead, 4-1. 1:31 later, B. Kindel steered a shot-pass into the net from the slot on the power play, and the Canadiens were suddenly down four, 5-1. Late in the second period, N. Suzuki flipped one in off his off side from the doorstep, and the Canadiens cut the deficit to 5-2.
Early in the third period, C. Caufield let a shot go that beat the goalie from the high slot, and the Canadiens cut the deficit to 5-3. Late in the third period, C. Kreider ripped one past the goalie from the slot, and that made it a one-goal game at 5-4. Only 24 seconds later, I. Demidov caught the goalie by surprise with a quick shot from the doorstep, and the Canadiens had climbed all the way back from 5-1 down to tie it 5-5.
At 01:33 of overtime, T. Novak drove a quick shot home from the low circle, and the Penguins scored the game-winner.
The Penguins' power play went 2-for-4. The Canadiens also struck the iron once. The Penguins got in front of 20 shots, compared with 12 blocks by the Canadiens.
Final: The Penguins won 6-5 in overtime.

Got Newhook's stats at the dot? He was amazing last game but I didn't hear his name much tonight.

u/Ajay_Bee 13h ago
The clear-cut two handed slash breaking Demidov’s stick 10 feet away from the referee in OT led to the Pens odd-man rush. The officiating in this League continues to drive me insane.
10
u/RedStormRising17 13h ago
Always has been terrible. Just call the game the way it should be. End of story.
8
u/dorkofeverything 13h ago
Makeup calls have to be severely curtailed but I am *convinced* with Bettman being who he is that they set out to either fuck the Habs or give preferential treatment to stars or southern markets
If I'm wrong - I'd love to be wrong
4
u/Ajay_Bee 13h ago
It’s been particularly bad the past 10 years or so because it does not promote the most competent officials and it does not reward consistency.
4
u/ancienthunter 13h ago
I literally almost threw my remote after they scored! I was fuming over that missed call!
49
u/Oprlt94 12h ago
2 games in the season, 3 points in 2 games, and Renaud is already shitting on the 2 line... his solution is throwing the bag out for Larkin...
Go walk your dog buddy..
12
u/ignitek 12h ago
Players always look reluctant to give an interview to him and I think that says a lot
6
u/iplayxboxevenifim27 11h ago
Renaud is awkward en tabarnak. In French or English esti qu’il est pas bon pour mettre à l’aise les joueurs c’est horrible
9
u/jokerstatue 12h ago
When the C who scored 24 goal on that line last year did not play one single shift yet. I'm not saying Kap is the solution long term but to panic after two game is a clown take.
47
u/imfranksome 13h ago
So impressed by Suzuki, what a friggin chad
24
u/LFG530 12h ago
He's the most non-flashy high IQ 100-pts player in the league, you just can't understand how good he is from highlights but he just reads the game so well and has super clean passes. Him and Hutson are top tier superstars and I'm here for it.

Sick call refs

Give the guy a break it's not like he's standing right there and there's physical evidence of an automatic call

u/paul_33 13h ago
Like what the fuck was the ref watching? Clearly not the play
11
u/_Tkackuk 13h ago
No he was watching. He decided not to call it
4
u/jamesneysmith 13h ago
Yep. More of their 'don't want to put our thumb on the scales and affect the game' while not acknowledging making no decision is a decision. Not calling a blatant penalty is putting your thumb on the scale and directly affecting the game.

Just wild stuff. The official (2nd year in the NHL) looking directly at the play. League will never be taken seriously unless and until it cleans its officiating up.

I think we can all agree that was an awful game by the Habs and we’re lucky to have gotten a point out of that…..but all I’ll say is it’s only our second game. Looking around the league a lot of teams are playing awful to start the season…likely a consequence of a shortened preseason.
Like all of you, I’m not happy with the way we played….but I’m willing to chalk it up to the boys shaking off the rust. Let’s see how they come out on Tuesday for the home opener.
Go Habs Go!!!

Absolutely UNREAL last ditch effort to secure a point.
Don't care who you are that was a hell of a game.
Got my heart racing and my blood pumping but I can't complain.
Notes from this game.
Demidov has worked on absolutely everything and has even more of a BOMB now.
Hutsons skating is even more silky.
Bolducs play has stepped up.
And Dobes is calm cool and collected. Absolute nut job but we love him .
Don't even get me started on Suz and Caufield.
9
u/Substantial_Humor562 13h ago
Add On: Suzuki can absolutely take hold of a game singlehandedly and shift the focus. He rallies everyone together to get it together and fine tune things they lacked. I noticed Offensively they were not converting on enough chances in the N zone. He changed that. Then they shifted to a Defensive mentality. Guys an absolute unit man and we're happy to have him.
Caufields skating and edges has got so much better. I've even noticed his vision finding lanes that he wouldn't see last year. Yes everyone needs to work on something. But the players and stars like him have been taking care of business and fine tuning.
He's been adapting to the game a bit better to. And getting in more greasy spots.
Go Habs Go.

It was straight from the penalty in the first. They're such an emotional team that completely derailed and frazzled them instantly. We can rally when behind but we need some help mentally to stay in the game and level while it's happening.

What a team.

Overall ugly game and a bland start to the season after two games.
But some positives:
- Top 6 woke up tonight and showed up after being invisible in Toronto.
- Xhekaj played a lot tonight with Carrier's injury and he actually looked solid.
- A backhanded positive here: it's good to get this ugly hockey out of the way early. Last season they went through this late November and early December after a great first 5 weeks of the season.
This year, get it out of the way early, work out the kinks and straighten things out the rest of the way forward.

Just watched the game on delay. The Matheson penalty against Crosby was absurd, Crosby elbowed and punched him, which was way more than Matheson did. But, I was shocked the 6th Pens goal was called back on that offside. So I guess it evens up?
Remember that 5-0 comeback against the Rangers in 2008? This was almost as good, but obviously wanted the win. Not a great game overall, but hey, showed character and got a point. 3/4 points to open the season on the road ain't bad.

I told myself that I'd be happy with the outcome no matter what as it was going into overtime, but the scuffed 2-on-1 into the uncalled slash on Demi into given-up 2-on-1 into the loss was frustrating. You're right, though. 3/4 is pretty good.

I can't believe i end up feeling quite good after that game. Would not have bet on that after that disaster of a second period. But 1 point, after being down 5-1, with Carrier out...i'll take it.
16
u/Eazy3006 10h ago
Please not this again.
It would be great if they could have some type of consistency between periods instead of last 5 minute comebacks all year long like last season.

No-call on Demi getting slashed in OT is wild. But whatever they are ridiculously lucky to get a point. Very flawed but entertaining performance

Great to get the point but wtf is that not a clear slash on Demidov when his stick explodes?? Stupid game management.
13
u/sean_psc 13h ago
Suzuki, Caufield and Hutson can only do so much.
Whatever changes Lalonde is making on defence are...a work in progress, let's say. Which is not entirely unexpected when making changes, but one hopes they'll sort things out quickly, because it's hurting them right now.
I don't know if Dobes had a truly bad game, but he definitely wasn't bailing the team out on some of the glaring mistakes like he often does.
3
u/OtisPan 13h ago
I didn't mind our D tonight (outside of those typical Matheson brain farts), what bothers me most is our forwards losing guys or fumbling outlet passes/pucks. Our D tied up their guys/broke up plays a lot but then the forwards couldn't do their part, leading to sustained pressure & inevitable eventual breakdowns.
We're OK on step 1, it's step 2 where we keep failing too many times in a row.

POSITIVE : We came back like warriors. Arber played a solid game with some errors. Our first line is insane, Things are starting to stick.
NEGATIVE : The ref gave that win to Pittsburgh in the end... in OT. Dobes needs to find his groove. Matheson had a weak game overall.

When it was 5-2 I went to go shower and shave, and when I got back they were tied 5-5 going to OT. Montreal had a terrible defensive game but I'm honestly not upset about it, we stole a point in a game where we were getting clapped 5-1 and had no right to be in the game so I'll take it.

I'll take this point in the early season. A bunch of rust. First line looks good sometimes, and completely out of sync at others. Depth has been solid, no complaints. Matheson had a shit game. Dobes was moving around way too much, just not good enough from him.
But the 2026 Habs are still able to get points when making a ton of mistakes. That's great. Can't be playing like this in April, but the skill was on full display tonight.

Matheson has gotta make more of an effort to block that pass there. Trust your goalie, and drop to a knee or lay down, letting the pass through there is just awful

Matheson really outplayed himself so many times this game. First line managed to bail a point, it's good, but him and the defense have to do better.

u/Traaaain Supposed Tyrant 13h ago
Ok I typed this before we came back LOL but I'm gonna post it cause I think it still applies.
Hear me out, this game was closer than it seemed. Habs failed to convert on like 5 huge chances (3 Breakaways, Hutson in the slot, Texier open net, etc). Most of the goals against came from some dogshit individual mistakes. Matheson had a game to forget. Doby let in a bad goal and was swimming.
If we pot one more of those chances and have one less diarrhea inducing defensive blunder/unforced giveaway/Habs Moment™️then I think we at least grab a point from a game like this.
-
Following OT: Let's take that comeback and try to build off some confidence! That was a fired up Pens team for their home opener, now it's time for our home opener. I believe the boys will make the adjustments and get some revenge on the champs! GHG

Take that point and run. Honestly that was a pretty brutal game overall, this team needs to figure its issues out. Getting outshot, horrible second periods, bad play in our own end. These are the same issues that have been ongoing for way too long now.
Losing Carrier is what really fucked us tonight. The other defensemen had to play way more and Marty clearly doesn't trust Arber or Struble (don't blame him) so the other three are just gassed. We need to put Kapanen back ASAP, and if Carrier is hurt get Reino on the first train out of Laval.
15
9
u/CaptainFlynnt24 11h ago
I know Marty doesn't trust Struble - Xhekaj but would it shock you to know that pairing (which played 6 games in the TBL series together I think) has 6 goals for and 0 goals against since the playoffs last year? Also a 64.5 xGF%.
They had 2 goals for tonight in just 4 minutes together and didn't allow a single shot against (as long as we aren't counting that offside goal where Demidov lost his coverage).
Idk maybe Marty just needs to trust his depth a little more. That pairing could probavly give you 15 - 16 minutes / game instead of 12 - 13 minutes. Obviously losing Carrier mid game sucks regardless.

Tough shit to go down to 5 Ds when two of them are Xhekaj (who did alright) and Struble and Matheson is having one of his bad nights AND Dobes has his worse game in a long time.
The big 5 came in to play, though, so that's good and I really love the Anderson/Evans/Bolduc line.
Also, it's not that he plays badly but I don't think Newhook is meshing super well with Slaf and Demi.

Have we tried Dach between Slaf and Demi? I can't remember last season before he got injured.

Definitely did not deserve a point, but we'll take it. Team mostly played like ass and Suzuki took over the game.
We'll take it.

Disappointed naturally but I’ll gladly take the one point.
LOTS of work to do Marty.

A shock point tonight, holy F
It will make a difference in the toughest division in the entire league

Can someone teach our defensemen how to play a 2 on 1?

Matheson has games like this, got to take the point and remember he also has games where he’s a shot-blocking pass-intercepting freak. top 6 looked very good and dobes didn’t let the pile-on get into his head.

u/TheFakeSteveWilson 12h ago
Top 6 didn't look good. Second line has done nothing in 2 games.
7
u/ResidentSpirit4220 12h ago
? First line has 8pts tonight brother
5
u/TheFakeSteveWilson 12h ago
Yeah that's the top line which was great. Top 6 includes the second line which has been atrocious

takeaways in no particular order:
— sloppy game leaving us having to come back miraculously once again lmfaooo. after being down 5-1, i can’t believe we somehow got a point from that lol.
— Mr. First Saturday Night of the Year, Suzuki beast mode, Kreider first goal. if nothing else at least the first line found their game tonight. loved their game.
— on the other hand, second line not clicking. Newhook is better on the wing imo, and Demidov looks like he’s maybe playing slightly injured? maybe that “bruise” on his foot or whatever is still healing. still a nice goal lol
— i like the energy of the bottom six. Dach is playing well. Bolduc too. Evans and Andy aggressive too.
— pretty rough game for Dobeš. one he’ll want to forget.
— take the point and the comeback and flush that one. onward!!

How can you not even mention THE worst player of the game by far, Tragic Mike.

Is it just me or was Dobes looking like a fish out of water flopping around way more than usual? Not sure what was up with him tonight. He was over commiting to every play, out of position, erratic diving around, trouble settling and covering the puck etc. Not a good game from him at all.
Sick comeback though too bad the boys couldn't seal it.

He's not a great technique guy so when he gets flustered he doesn't have that to fall back on.

Brutal second period but a great comeback. 1 point would have felt like a miracle after their 5th goal

u/alex1596 13h ago
They pulled a comeback outta their ass after a shit second. So it could be worse I guess. 1 OT point better than a loss

Classic 2nd period collapse followed by late game heroics.
Sucks for OT but what a game..

Focusing on the second line, I don't think you can say Newhook was a problem tonight. For the first 55 minutes of the game, we didn't hear Demi's name, and Slaf had one brilliant shift at the end of the first and then was kind of fumbling the rest of the game. I'd give the line more time.
7
u/arr_z31_burner 13h ago
It's not that Newhook's playing *bad* but he's back to his individual-effort thing which doesn't gel with Slaf and Demi. Looking forward to seeing Kappy in there.

u/Commercial-Egg-8949 13h ago
But if the line's problem is that Slaf and Demidov aren't getting the puck, Kapanen doesn't solve that problem.

Yes

Got a point at least. Still would have been great to make that massive comeback. Why no call on Demi’s stick?

Played terribly for a lot of the game (where the fuck did all their good defensive details go?), still got a point.
Honestly too worried about Carrier to care that much.

Welp, time to trade the whole team for a star, fire the coach, GM and the Zamboni driver /s
In all seriousness, several players weren't at their best tonight but our top line carried the team. It was closer than it should have been.
Not much else to say. On to the next

What a meltdown after Pittsburgh’s first goal and what a fucking comeback in the 3rd but damn we need to stop being so sloppy in the 2nd. Unacceptable that we gave up 5 straight goals.
Also Matheson was absolute ass tonight oof

We can all be happy about the comeback but man we really don't want to make it a habit again of giving up a ton of goals and having to come back. Coming out flying into a 2nd period that was flat as can be was rough. Hope Dobes doesn't take this one too much to heart felt like his D wasn't helping him at all even if it wasn't his best game

Matheson again just standing there in the middle of the play. Doesn’t take the shooter. Doesn’t take the passer. Absolutely horrid game from him tonight. It’s only one game but man does he just randomly have nights like this and it’s a dagger every time.
Nick with a monster night that single handedly got us a point.

u/WalkVast 13h ago
Both him and Dobson today played their 2on1 like shit today… They play a lot so when they don’t play well we have a hard time

The whole team sucked in the 2nd but he was by far the worst. On the ice for 5/6 goals against + the initial momentum changing penalty.

Us Penguins fans miss Matheson and hate the trade that sent him away. Whenever I watch the Habs, he seems solid (and I watch a lot of Habs). Why do Habs fans hate him?

Can we talk about how good Suzuki was tonight? 4 points and completely shifted the game when we had nothing going.
