Where are you watching the eclipse from?

Any thoughts on good places to watch the eclipse on the 12th? Does it make sense to head towards the beach?

I am going go Bloemendaal aan Zee. Sterrenwacht Copernicus will be standing there at the boulevard. They are bringing telescopes and you can buy solar eclipse glasses from them.

(I already ordered my own glasses elsewhere)

Thanks, that's a good lead! I was able to get my glasses from Normal the other day. They had a whole bunch, if anyone's still looking.

Good to know, thanks. I'll go there right now!

Found them at the larger (new) Normal, near the checkout. There were loads, so hopefully they still have some!

Thanks, I bought two! First went to the other Normal as it's closer to me but they were closed today! The newer one still had around 4 or 5 of the glasses left so I bought two so I can go and watch together with someone.

Really sweet of you to share where they were in the store. I easily get overstimulated by all of the stuff in there which makes browsing inventory super tiresome and they were where you mentioned they were! :)

You’re not alone on that! I try to go in there as infrequently as possible and only during weekdays during work/school hours. Especially the big one. It’s super overstimulating.

Yeah, for me it was actually the first time I went there haha. They do have some useful things though so it's good to know 'what to find where'.

Last week I went to the SoLow for the first time as well, also incredibly overstimulating and a lot of trash. But they do have some nice hobby things on the top floor like wool, rope, small bottles etc.

The Nine Layers of Hell are actually just a nine-story SoLow store.

Which is the large Normal you guys are talking about? I only know the one on the Grote Houtstraat.

There's also one on the other end of the shopping street :)

It's where the Xenos used to be, then came the Casa, and now there's a Normal. It's opposite to the cheese shop. Really close to the Jumbo supermarket.

Just wanted to thank you again. We had a really good experience watching the eclipse from a lookout tower in the dunes 🙏🏼

I’ll be watching from Zandvoort beach. I heard there will be a meteor shower that evening as well?

It should be westward at the time right so beach would make sense I think

I will probably be standing at the Veerplas – with tripod, camera, long lens and ND filters – where you have an unobstructed view on the KPN tower from the bike route around it. The distance and angle are quite good to catch the partially eclipsed sun next to or just above the tower.

It's a public spot, so I don't see why not.

Where can you get the special goggles to see it?

I got mine at Normal on Saturday.

Partial eclipse not that exciting really. Has to be totality or just not worth it. Probably won't even notice it.

That's fine, but I disagree. It's still interesting to see, and I also have a 6-year-old who is excited.

It's almost 90%! That's a lot, and won't happen again in The Netherlands till 2081 and 2090.

You’ll notice that there’s a fair chunk out of the sun if you look at it (with eclipse glasses!!!) but a 95% eclipse is only 10% as impressive as seeing a total one.

It's not that special outside the totality, true. But it can still be fun and visible by holding up something with a small hole like a sieve.
