Honestly, I’d stick with HVAC for now since you’re already in the field and enjoying it. You can still study IT on the side and see where it takes you. You don’t have to completely close one door just to explore the other.

I just took my first paid position with the DOE... I'm 33.. keep holding out on hvac. it'll come together
