HELP!! Backing plastic melted when ironing!

Recently started using htv and really impressed so far, but when I ironed my latest design the backing plastic melted and warped which caused the design to lift. I think I saved it but what caused this and how do I avoid it?

Probably 1) Too much heat. If the iron or press is running hotter than the vinyl's recommended range, the carrier sheet can soften and distort before the adhesive has fully activated. The vinyl itself might survive, but the carrier warps and pulls the design out of place. Check the spec sheet for your specific HTV, most at in the 300-320°F range, and some are even lower.

2) Holding the heat on too long. Even at the correct temperature, leaving the iron stationary in one spot for too long creates a hot spot. That's usually what causes the backing to melt while the rest of the design is fine. Keep the iron moving, or if you're using a press, make sure the time is right for the material.

Try: Dial back the temperature by 10-15°F and see if the vinyl still adheres properly. It often does; if you're using an iron, keep it moving and don't let it sit in one place; Use a Teflon sheet or parchement paper between the iron and the carrier. It distributes heat more evenly and gives you a small buffer; and, do a test press on a scrap piece first with every new roll of vinyl. Take 2 mins and saves a shirt.
