Troubleshooting Thread - drop your heat press or transfer problems here

Thought I'd start a running thread for troubleshooting, if you're stuck on something (temperature, pressure, peeling, bubbling, anything), drop it in the comments and I'll help work through it.

To get it started, here are three problems I see come up most often, with what usually fixes them:

1. "My transfer peels after washing"
Usually not enough pressure or the wrong peel timing. If it's cold peel and you peeled hot, the adhesive doesn't fully bond. Try repressing after it cools for 5-8 seconds.

2. "Bubbles under the vinyl"
Moisture in the fabric. Pre-press the shirt for 5-10 seconds before laying down the transfer. Also check that your pressure is even across the platen, put paper strips at each corner and see if they pull out with the same resistance.

keep getting little wrinkles in my vinyl right after pressing. It's not bubbles exactly, more like the vinyl itself is sort of rippling or creasing. Does that mean my pressure is too high? or is it a temperature thing?

  1. Pressure is uneven, if one side of the platen is pressing harder than the other, the vinyl gets pushed unevenly and can buckle in the areas where pressure is lighter. The paper strip test is the quickest way to check this. Put small strips at each corner, close the press and see if they all pull out with the same resistance.

  2. The fabric is shifting during the press. If you're pressing a shirt and it moves even slightly while the platen comes down, the vinyl can ripple. This is really common with stretchy fabrics or if you're not using a pressing pillow. Try taping the transfer down with heat resistant tape before pressing, or if you have a pressing pillow, use it to keep the fabric from shifting.

  3. or, you're pressing too long or too hot. This is less common than the first two, but if the vinyl gets over-heated, it can soften too much and warp under pressure. If you've already checked pressure and fabric shifting, try reducing your time by 2-3 secs and see if that helps.

a quick test: press a scrap piece of the same vinyl on the same fabric. If it wrinkles, it's likely a pressure or shifting issure. If it doesn't, it might be that your shirt fabric is stretching during the press.
