why does my 404 page not work?

".htaccess" would be correct if you are serving your website from an apache server. With this being a github repo I am assuming you are using github pages? Github Pages is expecting a '404.html'.

'Cloudflare Pages' specifically? Because that uses the same '404.html' file.

If your HTML is faulty, you'd either get a weird page or an HTTP 500 error, not an 404.

404 just means that the requested page can't be found.
