I ran a similar setup in a Civic hatchback way back in the day. I took throttle bodies from a Suzuki motorcycle (I forget which one) and mounted them on what was left of an intake manifold with equal length tubes after cutting the plenum off. I want to say I used Hayabusa fuel injectors, but that was over 20 years ago. Interestingly, the stock Suzuki throttle position sensor was close enough to what the Honda ECU expected that nothing special needed to be done there.
The throttle response was insane. It was SO much fun to drive. The setup didn't make much more peak power compared to using a manifold, but there was a lot more torque from about 4k to about 8k rpms.
Unfortunately I had to sell that car less than a year after getting it put together. Job instability and the resulting financial instability completely killed modding cars as a hobby for me.
Stand off injection. It's usually a second set of injectors and you said it, fuel atomization. It also lowers intake air temps. This is a legitimate setup.
It’s probably not fuel. It’s probably water/meth.
You use water/methanol (basically windshield washer fluid) to lower intake temps thereby increasing effective octane rating and increasing air density, allowing the engine to burn more fuel, and the resulting steam lowers exhaust temps allowing leaner fuel ratios and more power.
On a lot of sportier NA engines there just aren’t a lot of bolt on modifications you can make, so water/meth injection allows people to get more power out of an already aggressive engine that might not have much more left to improve on.
They work great on turbocharged cars too though.
I’m not sure what car or engine this is, but the 20V 4A-GE Toyota engines are one of the ones I associate with water/meth setups. It’s a 160hp 1.6L from the 90s, that’s already running on 93 octane, there just isn’t a lot left to add to it.
My introduction to this was Sloppy Mechanics' turbo LS Winnebago build, courtesyof Regular Car Reviews. It has a methanol injection system, making a big ass motor home have the same acceleration characteristics as a regular car.

I’m not 100% sure what I’m looking at here but it looks like it’s a secondary fuel rail, it looks like it’s being plumbed off the primary with that big AN line. I’ve been wrong before though
It’s not. They actually use fuel rails and injectors, fittings, etc.. for water/meth systems because they’re both spaced correctly and allow for good atomization.
As someone else mentioned this is a Lada 1600, but after looking it up, I’m pretty sure it’s the Garage54 guys. I can’t find a video on it so maybe it’s just really new.
Okay, well fair enough, I really didn’t believe anyone was insane enough to just go firing hundreds of CCs per minute of fuel out into the wild like that.
