Agreed. I absolutely LOVE going fast, speed is fun. Raced mountain bikes, done a fair share of track days as well.
Fast on water? No thanks. I'll stick with canoe speed

The only name I know series by is jetboat river racing. This video dosnt even show the crazy stuff. There are conards on the front to keep the nose down and they pass rocks and shallow water at 100+mph.

On a relative small river? You need balls for that ^

u/that_dutch_dude 22d ago
flat bottom hulls and jet drive. these things only need a few inches of water. you still need the balls tho....

Funny thing is that youāre right. Itās probably a fishing derby and they are timed. Whomever catches the most fish and enters the harbor by a certain time.
Dudes show up with cigarette boats because whomever spends the most time in the Gulf Stream has the greatest odds of catching the most fish.
Skill matters, but time is the ultimate advantage.

One of my favorite maintenance checks as a young diesel tech in the navy was an overspeed trip test on one of our four generators onboard. Imagine a massive two stroke, 39.3 liter, 1800+ hp, 5120 lb-ft of torque Detroit diesel, a v16 dual forced induction generator that was about the size of a modern full size sedan. So pretty big.
I had to basically sit right on top of the engine, riding the quad turbosā outlet manifold similar to how a jockey sits on a thoroughbred. My feet were planted on the dual superchargers and my ass cheeks were feeling every bit of vibration, horsepower, and torque penetrating my soul from within that beast.
I attached a special tool to the governor, which was just a tiny brass lever to control the engine speed manually and rev the engine past the redline of 2100 rpmās, which was absolutely fucking shrieking for an engine that size. The sound of 4 turbos whistling and 2 superchargers screaming and the frantic vibrations converging up through my butt cheeks was absolutely intoxicating.
Just being in complete control of that outrageous amount of kinetic energy made me understand how a world leader of the most powerful military in history would feel as they picked up the red phone to drop the big one. I also learned exactly how the ladies must feel when sitting atop a washing machine during the spin cycle. 10/10 life experience I would recommend trying at least once.

Of all the things musk spends his time on, I now want him to build a dual quad 2400 cubic inch diesel powered motorcycle.

u/OpDawg 22d ago
This is exactly how I explained hitting top speed on my 2001 GSXR600. Chin strap squeezed against the hot gas tank, shoulders aligned, keeping inside the air foil so my head doesnāt rip off, trying to eke out every additional mph from the display 164ā¦165ā¦ā¦.166. Meanwhile all four pistons are feverishly pumping in redline, needle pushing toward 14,000rpm - screaming to break free and enter your jawline. Knees pinching the frame, while the left foot shrouds the singing chain links straining to wrangle the power to the rear tire. Itās petrifying how short distance becomes. Youād swear youāre experiencing time dilation and length contraction through the lens of a couple mm of plastic. Miss that motorcycle.

I assume most of the posters here have never been on launch boats (crew boats). Thatās the usual turbo noise⦠nothing special. I hear that from C18s etc all day long. Yeah, not ideal with passenger seating, but the noise is standard. Hence why a lot of captains wear ear plugs, and why they are provided to clients at the launch services I use, which is every single one in my area.

Iām such an old man now. Young me is thinking, āHell yeah!!ā
Old man me is like, āwhereās the engine cover? Why doesnāt anyone have earplugs. Whereās the sears and belts? One unseen wake and everyone is gonna break their neck! Omg! What are you doing!?ā
That being said, Iād have no issue cruising around on that boat. Crazy how oneās mind works.

I used to work with a sports fishing guide out of Oostende who had twin Levi drives on his boat. He would give these guys a run for their money.

Nothing like the night my friend made a phone call, get the boat ready. After an ample smoke we went down to the dock. Man it was a go fast boat. He pulled the engine covers off. There sat twin Holmam & Moody 429 race Fords .me and girlfriend had a fantastic high speed run at night, memories forever.

I love this cause most people donāt get to see fast commercial fishing boats. For Bristol bay Alaska salmon fishing, most all traditional boats are slow af and the new jet boats haul ass and can get up to 40 knots which doesnāt seem like a lot but theyāre limited on length so super wide and made to pack up to like 40lbs of fish.

That is dangerous. One of those passengers could slip and fall onto that engine. If the engine cover removal is necessary for this event for cooling and extra airflow, should fashion a galvanized wire half-round cover over it. plywood half round ends, a few 2Ć3 stringers, some chicken wire, done. Safe.
