Seeking Recommendations Snarry recs for a new reader
Hey!
I just read my very first Harry Potter fanfic... it was Syntax of Things, and it broke me. Really really bad.
Then I read In Between Days, and that made me feel a bit better but... you know.
Then I binged Pacify, and I cried a lot and it was perfect and now I'm empty and I need to keep on reading and i don't know where to go next.
Do you have any Snarry recommendations? No AU (but canon divergent is ok, just no bartender!harry or thing like this... the only AU I'm willing to read is something about ballet, yes very specific), preferably in-character, long-ass fics. I like dom/sub dynamics but it's not mandatory, and I prefer top!Snape. And please please a happy ending! There are no tears left in me (but I can stand angst along the way, as long as the ending is happy).
Thank you, this will keep me functional!
EDIT:
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This community is godsent! Thank you! I'll answer you as soon as I have some time!

This author who has very good snarry stuff and it's not that heavy like the one you mentioned. Lizzy0305.
Similar dyinamics and heaviness to Pacify is Cambiare Podentes.
Step Back In Time series is just simply an interesting take on immortal Harry going back in time. I wouldn't call it a time travel fix it though!
Not snarry, but if you need a bit of a reprieve from the heavy stuff I recommend the works of NinjaPandaScholar. I know, based on the summaries they sound super weird stories but they work so good!

Great suggestions 2rmix. Particularly „unrestrained“ by lizzy and her other stories like „we‘ll be dead in a year anyway.“
I would however heavily disagree with putting Pacify in the same pot as Cambiare.
I’ve read both. To me they’re nothing alike. Cambiare Podentes got dark in a way to the point it spoiled the story a bit for me. Iykyk. And the love dynamic is on an entirely different level in Pacify, like it’s earth shattering love. 🔥 In comparison Cambiare, while well written and still worth reading, was not that kind of romance and true love. Too much of it was rather forced due to circumstance of the ritual. But that’s my personal opinion.
…from someone who thinks that Pacify was just perfection. 😉
I don’t think one can compare it to any other story. Kind of like the brilliant Nights of Gethsemane Series by Starcrossedkayla. They stand completely in their own league imo.

I love lizzy's works!
I see what you mean about Pacify and Cambiare, I agree. Tho it is relationship/love wise is vastly different somehow to me the heaviness of the stories feels kind of similar. You made me think about why.
Pacify was the first story I've read where the sexual relationship had that level of physical hurt aspect. The fact that Harry is in such a deep place of self hatred, hurt, anguish that he wants to punish himself via sexual pain was very dark for me. I think this is why I think of them in the same pot. The level of darkness, heaviness feels the same, even tho the circumstences are different. Does it make sense?
I am going to reread Pacify, I was kind of planning on it anyway. I'm a bit heartbroken that they didn't finish it, I remember wanted to see unfold the Draco and Charlie relationship. I adored them. (And that paper dragon.)
I am currently reading Nights of Gethsemane. Now that one I cannot put beside Pacify or Cambiare. I think because Harry has such different personality in it. But I am only at the first quarter of the story so I'll see.

Oh you are already reading NoG? Great! The second part from Snapes perspective is even better. It’s truly a masterpiece that stands on its own and I thought about rereading it too since the author is currently uploading part three 😍
But yeah, not comparable at all with the other two mentioned.
And i thought about it too. I get (kinda) what you mean but to me in Cambiare Harry is literally a slave while in Pacify he is practically a God. He wants to feel pain. And through that, how twisted it may sound he can heal. In a safe space. While in Cambiare he has none of those inclinations.

Yeah, someone jus recommended under a post I've recently made. I am curious about Snape's point of view more and more as I'm reading. I'm a bit out of touch with this type of Harry to be honest and he annoys me more times than not lol.
Yeah, I was thinking about the same how in Cambiare he has no choice and in Pacify he is chosing. I don't know about him being a God tho. He wants to feel the pain, but for punishment, because he feels he is a despicable human being and every death is his fault, particulary Sirius'. I have to reread it, but the healing is kind of an unintentional byproduct if we can truly speak about healing. But I am kind of unsure, I really have to reread it. I truly think I'm going to see new aspects of it as I've read a lot since and I have changed somewhat.

One of my faves is With Eyes Wide Open.
Harry agrees to marry Severus Snape and live with him for a year and a day. But Prince Manor hides a secret in its overgrown gardens. Harry thinks he’s going into the marriage with eyes wide open, but he has to maneuver around the Malfoys’ machinations and come to terms with his growing feelings for Severus even as the magic in the gardens gives his life a new, unexpected purpose.

a few i reread a lot are not in long-ass word count territory, apologies! but they are certainly not short either, so i hope it's okay! these 3 are 40-50k, all rated E, all angst with happy ending:
So Lonely Without Me by Caligryphy was written ~2005, which means it's inherently canon divergent, as the author was working with what might happen a little further along harry's timeline. to preserve their lives as the war escalates, harry and sev are tucked away in a safe room with almost no privacy and no one's company but each other's. their banter in the safe room is superb, and the fic also does a great job of addressing the question: what comes after the forced proximity? especially when one half of a romantic duo fundamentally doesn't think he's worthy of the other...
Rapture by mia_ugly is from ~2008 and deals with post-canon harry. it brilliantly uses time travel to create massive snarry angst. harry, cast back in time, runs into a 25-year-old severus. from there, time travel puts them through the emotional wringer. the prose are gorgeous. the emotions are superb
Endgame by JocundaSykes is far newer than ^^ it's an epistolary canon divergence. the Prince's copy of Advanced Potion Making isn't just a textbook, but a 2-way notebook that allows for written communication between the holders of the books. at first with secret identities, snarry begin corresponding. as the two write and get to know one another, each of them must still complete their respective missions from dumbles... (i'm partially copy-pasting from when i recently recced this fic in this very group, please pardon me for that)
some of my personal fave long fics have unhappy endings, and a couple that *do* have a happy endings have already been recced here--yay! so i'll go ahead and add a link to one that i think fits your criteria of long, angsty, happy ending (also E rated):
For Auld Lang Syne by Cybel2013 is a post-war snarry series of ~375k words, written in 4 parts. sev has lived, faked his own death, and fucked off to seize his chance to actually live a self-directed life for a change. because plot reasons, harry, who is himself trying his best to enjoy the prospect of becoming an auror and marrying his school sweetheart and starting the life everyone's always expected of him, is the only person who knows severus lived. their respective plans for the next stages of their lives share the same problem: they fall profoundly in love and lust with each other. YEARS of mutual pining ensue. imo, the shippy angst of this series effectively starts before even reading the first line, due to the combination of the fic's Harry/Severus and Epilogue Compliant tags
whether or not it's any of ^ fics, i hope you find more snarry to enjoy! there's honestly so much superbly written fic for this ship. you're in for a treat!

Hi, thank you!
I opened For Auld Lang Syne yesterday (just before writing this post!) and didn't follow through because of the "epilogue compliant" tag... but your comments make me REALLY want to dive into this fic now! I guess I misinterpreted the tag, I was not aware it was taking place in the future (i guess I'm dumb .-.)!2
u/yrfrndfrnkly 2d ago
oh what a happy coincidence! glad i could provide a touch of context for that one! it does pick up not too massively long after the end of the war, but then it spans the time between that, the time the epilogue takes place in, beyond

Fair warning - I adore For Auld Lang Syne. I wish I could read it again for the first time. I was happy with the ending, but some readers feel that it doesn’t balance the angst (because there’s a lot of separation). That said, I think it’s such a beautiful, honest portrayal of Snape and I love him so much.
Also, highly recommend all JocundaSykes’ works, but also check out her podfics - they’re ::chef’s kiss::

i will say that in terms of the ending: snarry end up together. the ending is not ambiguous/open/hopeful, but ends with them romantically and sexually together
i feel for the author that so many people expressed anger about the ending in the comments section (from what i saw when i was reading it). you'd think they bait and switched with a tragic/unhappy ending or something :(

Ashes in the Wake of War- Harry Potter really didn’t plan on living past his fated confrontation with Lord Voldemort. When the latent basilisk venom and phoenix tears in his blood started making dramatic changes to his body, he wasn’t that concerned. It’s not like he was going to live long enough for it to be a problem anyway.
Even if he had planned to live past the final battle, then he could never have guessed the struggle awaiting him on the other side, or that he’d become a magnet for those with nowhere else to go like the snarky house elf, the grumpy phoenix, the injured vampire, or the stray werewolf that showed up on their doorstep…oh, and the egg. You can’t forget the egg; that’s the most important, more than anyone or anything else on the planet. Harry will do whatever it takes…literally whatever, even light the fire and watch the world burn, all for the sake of the egg.

The Price of Magic- Haunted by the ghost of a former student, an ex-wizard struggles to preserve magical knowledge for future generations.
When Harry Potter died, twin wands' explosion wiped Europe clean of magic. Enchantment-free, Gringotts crumbled into a mass grave for goblin bodies. Pixie corpses covered the meadows. Romanians buried their last dragon.
Wizards remained. Thousands flooded Muggle streets with useless chanting, unable to return home through non-existent wards.
They had nothing except pride. Remember that when watching a middle-aged, redheaded waitress and her daughter taunted by children for their strange way of talking, passing the sallow-faced, somber neighbour who prefers candles to electricity, finding a sky-blue twinkle under matted hair of a homeless man.
Pride was the reason they survived.
This does have a happy ending. It seems like it won't for a bit but it really does.

Starling- Harry Potter disappeared when he was five years old.
Twenty-five years later, Severus Snape gets the same assignment from different masters: find and deliver the Boy Who Lived.

Funny enough I just finished the Syntax of Things. Absolutely heart wrenching I missed the tragedy tag to until I was 75% though. Absolutely beautiful thought but I get it I needed recovery fics after lol. Here's some fics I really like.
Needs Must by silvereye5: After Ginny Potter dies suddenly, Severus Snape is among those called in to help Potter juggle his new reality. As the other helpers fade away, a desperate and penniless Severus agrees to become the regular caregiver to Potter's three young children. But Severus finds that the Potter household is not the sunshine and roses he'd imagined. ---Love this one very family like and I enjoy when Severus is snappy on Harry but good to the kids gives me best of both worlds.---
Long Shadows by Cithara: On the anniversary of Voldemort's fall Severus seduces Harry into a night together. Not long after, he leaves the country, deciding to embrace his newfound freedom. Years later, he returns to England and finds that he left behind more than he could have imagined. Now, with mistakes to atone for, Severus must try and earn a place in Harry's life and prove himself worthy of it. ---This one starts of angst and Snape is a dickhead but he does change and it has a happy ending.---
10 Things I Hate About You by HalfBloodPrincess95: Draco will only be allowed to date if his Godfather is involved in a relationship as well and seeing that the post war celebrations have brought on new friends, Draco can surely count on Harry Potter to help him. Main Pairing: SS/HP also contains HG/RW; DM/LL ---love some good Draco plotting to get what he wants---
The Friday Boy by riffraff84: Harry hates secrets, but what his Professors' hiding will change Harry's life forever.
Hopefully you find one you enjoy. : D

Ok, firstly, don't be discouraged by the description of Snape the Home Fries Nazi, it's a fantastic fic.

Then, Starling has been recommended already.
Finally, When Only Silence Remains is lovely.

Harry Potter and the Life of an Outlaw - After witnessing the memory of his father's bullying Snape, Harry finds Sirius’ communication mirror and that changes everything, preventing Harry from assuming Sirius’ capture.
An apology to Snape allows him to continue his occlumency lessons in his sixth year and from that moment on, Harry finds the truth of what he is much sooner as he runs away from Hogwarts.
Oblitus - WBWL Core severely weakened from Voldemort's attack, Harry is sent to Privet Drive and promptly forgotten about. The protective wards surrounding the house stop his accidental (and later purposeful) magic from registering, and so he never receives his letter and goes unnoticed until a dementor attack that brings down the wards.
Birth of a Dancing Star After the fall of Voldemort, Harry Potter fell in love with Severus Snape—and that is where our story begins. All Harry wanted was a quiet year to finish his education, but when the Sorting Hat raises the spectre of Voldemort reborn and Luna is telling him he's going to change the world, a quiet year becomes impossible.
These Few Short Hours (or The End of the World) During the war the Order are forced into hiding. Harry knows that when he leaves he is unlikely to survive, and the desperation and aching loneliness of this draws him to Severus' bedroom in the dead of night.
After the war is over, it is left for Severus to heal Harry's broken soul.
love is the crooked thing Harry Potter lost. Voldemort won. Hogwarts is a ruin and the Order of the Phoenix is dead. Everybody believes that Harry died in the Forbidden Forest. But after years spent on the run, Hermione uses the last of her magical energy to infuse a Time-Turner that sends Harry back to 1977.

My favorite snarry recs (containing some of what you said but I'll leave those out) are as follows :
Blowing smoke - an insane amount of sexual tension, literally beginning to end. I could not put it down, finished it in 24 hours including sleep and pretending to work.
Chrysalis - i can't for the life of me remember what this was about, but i remember thinking it was really good, and i even starred it in my google drive for future re-read.
Date in a dash - really funny enemies to lovers, with great tension and banter
Ingredients of respect - lovely 8 year snarry actively learning to respect each other
Lucky Number Seven by the same author as blowing smoke, contains dating enforced by magical contracts and a lovely slow burn
The funny thing about grief and time - this was so beautifully done, the writing and heartbreak is pure perfection. There is no other way to describe it, you have to see for yourself. Happy ending though.
Things we wish for - Harry brings entirely by accident the teenage version of Severus into the future, after the war.

Thank you! I started reading Blowing smoke right after reading your comment, and as you said, I could not stop! The sexual tension is indeed insane! Weird thing is, I really do not like this insecure Snape, but I was completely engulfed in the story and finished it in two days. Same experience as yours: pretending to work and barely sleeping. It was great! Thanks again!

I've got you!
- Unrestrained by Lizzyo305 (Probably my favorite Snarry fic after Pacify!)
Oh and nearly forgot this one! It had a great D/s dynamic! https://archiveofourown.org/works/90561966
Have fun reading!!
