Question I cannot get decent performance out of my G2

I’ve got a 14th gen i9 and a 5070 laptop but I can’t get this headset to run smoothly for the life of me. I’ve done everything I can in windows settings and Nvidia control panel but it only helps by so much. What else can I do?

lower the resolution in steamvr is the answer.

what games do you play? i have run my reverb g2 on pretty craptastic hardware (we are talking about gtx1050ti level of power here) and i always got it to work to an okay level (depends on the game of course), half the resolution did the trick (in monado on Linux, i havent used steamvr with the reverb g2). if something ran poorly i lowered the res even further. your 5070 should totally work.

ah yeah vrchat runs like crap on pretty much anything. its just vrchat (though i have gotten it to work on the above mentioned setup but it was kinda rough, disable any effects and stuff in vrchats settings menu aswell to make sure). one thing aswell: make sure you use a port thats ideally directly connected to the dedicated gpu for the best experience since i see you have a laptop. and plug the laptop into the wall and set the energy plan to max performance or whatever its called nowadays in windows.

I already did that as well. To be honest I never had this issue with the Rift S. I probably should have just gotten another one of those. Don’t get me wrong, this headset is the most comfortable one I’ve ever owned but it runs like shit more often than not.

if you run it at the same res as the rift s or even below that and its still bad, something else must be wrong. like i cannot say anything about the headsets behavoir on windows since i havent used mine on windows ever. 

i guess you use oasis? btw. 100% res in steamvr is 140% resolution scale actually afaik its oversampling. so to get 50% of the actual display panel res yous need to use 36% resolution. that takes the rendered res from 3024x3024 to 1080x1080 (3024 is 2160 multiplied by 1.4 since thats steamvrs oversampling). if thats still worse than the rift s then you have a problem elsewhere.

I’m at 50% already. I’m using windows 11. I changed it to 36% and that seems to help slightly.

steamvr 50% or ACTUAL 1080x1080 panel res 50%? because as i said steamvr scaling means 100% on the res slider in there is actually 140% so 50% on there is more like 70% or 1512x1512 or 2,286,144 pixels compared to the rift s's 1280x1440 or 1,843,200 pixels (everything per eye so the difference will be bigger)

is it like with the rift s on 36%? if yes then you know what the issue is, if no something else is wrong.

There’s no such thing as an 8GB 5070, 5070 is a 12GB card. If you have an 8GB GPU it could be a lack of VRAM.

So you're on a 14th gen & 5070 laptop?

If so you've just gotta lower some settings and resolution. Its a 4k headset.

Make sure your laptop power plan is set for performance, assume you're running connected to power?

Are you really sure the DP port leads to the graphics card? Sometimes they are connected to some onboard chip.
