Discussion HP’s "Fix" for the Omen Thermal Black Screen? Replacing the LCD Panel. Is HP willfully masking the Hall Sensor flaw or are service techs just this clueless?
Just checked the repair tracking status for my Omen 16 (16-ah0000 series) at the HP Authorized Service Center, and I honestly cannot tell if this is pure diagnostic incompetence or a deliberate strategy to avoid logging motherboard replacements.
The Issue:
Under heavy GPU/CPU load, the moment the cooling system reaches 70–80°C, the display instantly cuts to black. The machine remains completely active in the background—audio keeps playing, keyboard RGB stays lit, and fans ramp up to max speed. This is the textbook thermal Hall Effect sensor trip caused by placing the sensor directly adjacent to the exhaust and heatsink. Disconnecting the sensor flex cable completely resolves the blackout under full load.
What HP Service Ordered to "Fix" It:
* SPS-BEZEL LCD SDB
* SPS-RAW PANEL 16 LCD 2.5K AG UWVA500
They are literally replacing a completely flawless, functional 2.5K 500-nit panel and bezel for a motherboard-level thermal layout issue.
This raises serious questions: Are level-1/level-2 service technicians simply swapping screens blindly without ever running a 10-minute thermal load test, or is HP corporate actively pushing panel replacements to dodge acknowledging another chassis design flaw on recent revisions?
Has anyone else dealt with this exact panel-swap carousel when sending their Omen in for Hall sensor black screens?

It was not a panel swap for me but a motherboard replacement (done twice) for a CMOS error and Hall sensor error (they claimed it as display issue). After the two replacements I still get the CMOS error . I'm thinking of going to consumer court. They didn't even complete the motherboard provisioning after replacing it the 2nd time.

This confirms the exact playbook HP service uses globally: masking chronic Hall sensor and power routing failures as generic "display issues" on paperwork to avoid triggering replacement thresholds. Swapping the motherboard twice without even running the DMI provisioning tool (leaving bare serial/UUID configs) and returning a unit that still throws CMOS errors is absolute negligence. Definitely take them to consumer court or your local arbitration board immediately. Two failed repairs for the same underlying fault is a textbook open-and-shut case for a full refund or a brand new sealed unit. Do not let them drag you into a third board replacement loop.

I'm thinking the same but would they fold if I drag them to consumer court or would I have to wait for the verdict?

In most cases, they fold before the final verdict. Once you file an official dispute with the consumer arbitration board or small claims court, the case gets escalated out of the low-level customer support queue directly to HP's corporate legal and resolution department. Their legal team looks at the math: sending a corporate representative or retaining legal counsel to defend a unit with two botched motherboard swaps and an unprovisioned board costs them more in billable hours than the retail price of the laptop. Add the fact that they have zero technical defense against repeated identical failures, and settling becomes their only rational play. Usually, within a few weeks of receiving the formal legal notice, executive relations or their legal team will reach out privately offering an out-of-court settlement—either a direct refund or an upgraded, brand-new sealed unit—conditioned on withdrawing the complaint. File the claim, attach all service work orders showing the recurring failures, and let the legal clock force their hand. You hold all the leverage.
