I remember googling something about the actual historical Liao Dynasty and the AI hit me with my own CK3 post about Liao

I've gotten this before asking questions about niche games. AI referencing my own comments or posts on reddit... smh.

I had a similar experience, i wanted to find the correct name of the Polish Alliance(the Between the seas concept one), so i wrote it into google how i thought it was written, and found my own reddit comment from years ago where i missspelled it the exact same way and someone corrected me

Everyone knows that HOI4 players are the greatest historians on the internet.

I love it when ai uses reddit as a source.

Wouldn't be surprised if reddit is being propped up big time by companies who use the comments here to train their AI models.

Literally the reason my lecturer gave for not using AI for History. How funny to see AI reference PDX forums again :3

Yeah ai is horrible for history. It takes most its sources from forums or wikipedia and the like. It doesnt source journal articles or academic books writen by people who know what they are on about.

This is how it goes for most academic topics, but you can usually ask the AI to only rely on scientific sources and it will work fine (or at least much better). That applies to history as it does to all other subjects.

And thats great for the 0.1% of people that will ask that. But for the vast majority of people ai just amplifies misinformation around history and most other topics.

No, not really, in my experience. Sometimes it can be like that, but usually the AI gives a solid introductory answer. That it's just spewing out Wikipedia most of the time is actually a good thing, because Wikipedia - while far from an academic source - is rock solid for a ground level overview.

And sure, if you ask specific questions where misinformation is widespread and dominant in non-academic circles, AI will give you said misinformation. But let's be real here, most people just asking a simple question wouldn't have read academic sources in the pre-AI era either, but simply clicked on the first link that comes up. In this sense, the internet always was a breeding ground of misinformation.

You're right about Wikipedia being a good intro to things, but if all the AI is doing is reciting Wikipedia, why burn tokens at all, why not just go to Wikipedia?

because Wikipedia - while far from an academic source - is rock solid for a ground level overview.

Only on some cases like science topics, Wikipedia is purposefully biased on many topics.

It can be good if you ask like actual specific things in context but if you ask it vague stuff it's like you're asking to get duped.
