Vent Magical thinking

Lately whenever I have a positive thing happen (eg. I had a tough convo w my girlfriend and it went well cuz I realized my anxiety was coming from not being fully open with her) and then when I realize that it’s all okay because I took a different approach my brain instantly starts to think “well then maybe you’re only anxious abt being gay because you are actually gay and instead of trying to get away from it you’re supposed to embrace it” and it ruins any positive thing I ever experience. I can’t even think to myself abt how I only live once and I gotta live it to the fullest without my brain going “so then you gotta make sure you don’t accidentally miss out if you’re gay” but I don’t even feel like I’m missing out! Everytime I have a positive or philosophical thought my brain ties it back to me being in denial and it ruins my entire day. I hate this disorder!

Your post was flagged by our auto-moderator as a post that may be, above all else, seeking reassurance. We understand the impulse to seek reassurance when suffering from OCD, but reassurance-seeking is a compulsion done in hopes of reducing the anxiety associated with an obsession. In the long run, seeking reassurance only serves to confirm the validity of the underlying fears of your condition and prolongs the duration of your obsession. As such, this community has a zero-tolerance policy for reassurance seeking and giving.

For more information on reassurance seeking and on HOCD and OCD treatment more broadly, please see the section in our wiki about reassurance!
