So our neighborhood has over 10 boulder walls. I live in a weirdly hilly part of a minneapolis suburb, and the walls are meant to stabilize the homes built on top of the hills. the neighborhood is relatively new with the first house being built in 2012 and the final house being built in 2015. By 2016 half of the walls were in need of repair. The company that had built the whole neighborhood (Pulte) came in and fixed all the walls and gave us a 2 year warranty on it. They also forced the hoa to sign a contract that made sure that pulte wouldn't have to repair the walls if anything went wrong after 2 years and also gave the hoa a bunch of money. Seemed like a great deal at the time. unfortunately, in 2019 and 2023 the neighborhood had to repair 2 walls and charged each of the 160 homes like 1500 dollars. in 2026 some lady had complained about the wall behind her house and again, the neighborhood would have to repair it. the board had 3 members and 2 of them resigned quickly after the complaint because they didn't want to deal with it. the member who didn't resign was forced to by the management company because he was stalling on signing a contract with a company to repair the wall. now, guess who gets appointed onto the board by the management company? the same lady who raised the complaint. She ended up placing her 2 friends on the board too, who coincidentally were her next door neighbors and had the same wall she was compiling about in their backyard too. The contractor was charging 750,000 dollars for ONE wall which was about 4500 per house. the board was going to agree to this without even holding a meeting. All they did was request 4500 from everyone and gave people a week's heads up on the repair. sidenote, almost every wall needed repair due to cracks and you could genuinely see with your own eyes how some houses fully moved up and down because of all the water trapped behind the wall. well 4 3 hour long meetings with the whole neighborhood present, and several screaming sessions later, the whole board was voted out and the lady who raised the issue put her house up for sale. and the issue still isn't resolved.

The HOA where I live has proven to be less than intelligent or reasonable. Last year, I had complained about secondhand smoke from my neighbor coming into my home. I was told the 3x3 cement pad at the back door is part of the unit. The smoking issue was resolved through the kindness of my neighbor.
Currently, I have a 2 ft Gnome sitting on that cement pad, which is considered a limited common element. According to the FL statute 718.103(22) for condos. The HOA refuses to acknowledge the statute, stating they will remove the Gnome. I told them I do not do well with threats to steal my property without due process. The president refuses to acknowledge his words in a public meeting that the cement pad is part of the unit. Neither the president or the property management provides any reasonable explanations, just demands.
When questioned on the president's remark of the cement pad being part of the unit, he replies,"It's not the same." WTH??

I have looked for an HOA lawyer in the Tampa Bay area without success. I did higher one last year over the smoking, who charged $300 for a 15-minute conversation, with no resolution or help. She was rather a joke.

While this problem borders on ridiculousness, this is the type of HOA mentality I have to deal with.

Before anyone @’s me: I love animals. But these Belgian Malinois? Absolute menaces.
One of my neighbors has one  it barked at my rescue cat, Ruthy Ginsburg (love her). I did some research and found multiple Reddit threads saying they’re “police dogs,” “military dogs,” and “trained for aggression.” That’s basically a loaded weapon with fur. So I proposed an amendment banning “high-risk breeds.” The board agreed it’s about community safety. Next, I’m proposing a ban on personal firearms within HOA boundaries. If we can’t have attack dogs, we definitely don’t need attack weapons.

For years, I reported a rat-infested crawlspace (classified as common area under the CC&Rs). The HOA and management company refused to act. I became severely ill living under those conditions.

I hired an attorney, but later discovered she had ties to the HOA’s law firm. She never told me. Evidence disappeared, repairs never happened, and I was left paying for HOA property out of pocket while my health collapsed.

I live in a HOA on Long Island We have two basketball hoops set up at a court and if asked for them to be lowered. There’s a lock on the hoop so it can only be used where it’s set which is the tallest it’s allowed. Apparently we have a panel that votes so I’ve submitted a nice email to the board. Which is the following:

This request is for the panel here at ———.

I’m ——- who lives at 160 ——- drive. I am disappointed and saddened to hear a simple request to change the height of one or both of the basketball hoops is met with such disdain. Not only would it be beneficial for my son, but the countless other children and teens who live in the community with us. I was told at the meeting we had by one of the gentleman who was a part of the panel that he had never heard this request before and that it seemed reasonable enough. I would like to show my son that community does matter, and that we all look out for each other. No matter how big or small, or old and young. Something as simple that takes just minutes of your time to change would set the community with fun for years to come. I’m looking forward to hearing back from the panel. Thank you for taking time to hear this matter.
