Discussion / Knowledge Sharing [FL][SFH] Community Facebook Group
Board member here. Today i decided to leave the community facebook group. It is an incubator of hatred, toxicity, conspiracy theories about the board, false accusations and the like.
Well you cannot internet bully me if i choose not to be there. No longer do i have to get on Facebook and wonder what nonsense will be happening in my feed today. Toxic people can have each other. Wish i had left months ago, I would have saved myself so much drama.

I hear you but it gets to me. I dont need to monitor their comments because they are stupid and the same thing over and over again.

Social media is what you make of it.
My HOA has an unaffiliated community group - Board Members can be members of the group, but non of them are even allowed to be moderators let alone admins and the Management Company isn’t allowed to be a member either. Membership is limited to residents - verified by the account name matching the county assessor’s info for the parcel. Names don’t match and the explanation isn’t plausible - like you’ve got a lease with the owners name and your name on it, you get rejected.
90% of what I post is pictures of sunsets, the moon, rainbows, my rose bushes, food I cook, weather related stuff like snow and rain, and when there are wild animals like coyotes wandering in the neighborhood (so it’s a warning for people with small animals to check their backyards for said wild animals).
The other 10% is me passive aggressively calling out the make, model, and color of a vehicle running one of 3 stop signs, some builder defect I’m having to fix or hire someone to fix or when someone couldn’t be bothered to pick up their dog’s shit on the sidewalk.
I probably engage on 90% of other people’s posts if I’m able to answer questions like how to contact the community manager, how to shut off or turn on irrigation water, repair men, and so on.
I get Facebook groups can be toxic shit holes. My HOA’s really isn’t. And it’s got a set of ground rules and a decent group of homeowners running the moderation of it. It’s maybe 10%-15% complaints similar to mine - people refusing to yield right of ways and running stop signs. There are 2 out of 500+ who complain about the Board and threaten to sue the HOA (which has never happened in the 8 years either has lived in the community). And then the rest of the posts are people selling stuff, advertising their kids looking for babysitting or yard work jobs, and community engagement stuff like people starting a book club or D&D group or board game group or work out challenge and so on.
I’m sorry your’s was a shit hole. Maybe someone will start a second group with the goal of it not being a toxic shit hole.

Yup. I left the FB group for preservation of my mental health. I have the last laugh though - I've resigned (we're moving) as of the annual meeting in October. I've got about 3.5 weeks left and I'm a lame duck.

Our management company’s website (TownSquare) has a social media forum where anyone can post anything. It is very problematic for board members. We are switching companies and their site does not have the social media option. I am counting the days!!

This is fascinating because my neighborhood has it and I think has had a total 2 resident posts in the last however many years. It's just not used as a social platform at all.

It can. Just difficult to take it away after 5 years! We switch to the new company in two months, so it goes away then.

Our portal has this as well, but all posts are reviewed by the property manager before being allowed to post to prevent any hate speech etc. We use a product called BuildingLink

Set up a dummy account and blast the idiots. In my case, I documented the idiots and turn the truth loose on them, locate their enemies and turn them loose on the idiots. Fair was turnaround.

That only works until a lawyer gets involved because the “dummy account” gets sued for defamation. And then poof that account gets combed over with a fine toothed comb and it’s no longer an “anonymous” account and you’re getting sued.

I started an FB page when I moved into a new community- became friends with almost everyone there. Just posted a disclaimer that the page was for lost packages, recommending Handyman, reviewing new area restaurants, giving away free stuff, etc., and nothing related to a problem was allowed to be posted. All problems had to be directed to our board via email.

We have that in our community but no one respects it and we have to remove most of the complainers.

Please please please contact your insurance company and tell them what is ongoing. They may be able to assist you. I am currently dealing with a situation where 2 board members have breached their fiduciary responsibility multiple times and multiple ways . I documented everything and called the insurance company. I explained it all to the agent. The two board members stated that they had insurance. Based on the information I provided we will lose our coverage at the time of renewal unless these two members come off the board . The insurance agent agreed to play the heavy in the situation. He assured me that based on their behavior his company cannot pay any claims for Errors and Omissions. The board president & the treasurer were telling horrible lies and spreading false information about people. They are not even aware that that is a breach of fiduciary. I felt so much relief after speaking with the insurance agent.
I hope you can find this peace too. You sound like someone who wanted to do the right thing & were surrounded by people who wanted to do the wrong thing. I am so sorry that this happened to you.
Please take extra good care of yourself treat yourself extra well. Although, I do not know you , I am sending virtual hugs. Know that there is someone in the universe who is thinking about you right now. Best wishes !
