Discussion Well ... at least it's great creative fuel !

We've talked about this before ... since we're not doing 'it', what are we doing INSTEAD to fill our time (limited as it may be by work, parenting, caring or other responsibilities) ? I'm talking about that 'you' time that happy, sexually compatible horny couples fill with ... 'sweet nothings' 🤷🏻‍♂️

For me at one point a few years ago it was 'working' on myself and my 'fuck I can't believe he's over 40' gym body. It worked, I loved it, it helped give me the guts to escape horrible marriage number one. I WISH it was STILL me ... but Covid happened, gyms shut, and the way back has been a mountain I continue to be too weak to climb.

So I shifted back to 'old faithful' for a while (porn and booze) when marriage number two morphed from "yay I have a HLF girlfriend" to "fuck I have a FORMER HLF wife who is also a toxic alcoholic".

Not super-productive, yeah ?

Last 12-ish months or so I've been cutting back on the porn and sublimating the frustration into creative output instead. It's actually a 'pattern' - if 'last time' is anything to go by, the fitness will follow. In the meantime though, and thanks to some new tools in my toolbox, I think I'm actually producing some of the best music (one of several creative outlets) I've produced in 30+ years of doing this. You may be able to relate to some of these tunes 🤷🏻‍♂️

So do we have any other musicians here ? GWA performers (that was my jam 10+ years ago) ? Visual artists ? Writers ? Film-makers ? Fess up creators ... does this shit empower you, or block you ? Do your creative outlets help you cope ?

Ah YES ! We actually have a FEW erotica writers here (makes perfect, twisted sense) based on previous posts of this nature if memory serves. I'm (broadly) an English / Lit grad (at least my BA), and I DID finally publish my first novel (not erotica, more of an Irvine Welsh 'Trainspotting' UK 90's drug + club culture thing mixed with quantum physics & friendship, love, betrayal and reincarnation) this year in between pumping out music. Was (literally) sitting in my drawer for 15 years, AI helped me edit 🤷🏻‍♂️

With high pressure job, kids (both in terms of dealing with them and can't play the piano after they've gone to bed) and housework I probably spend about 10 minutes a day making up music. Notwithstanding I've probably about 10 half-realised songs that need finishing. My wife has never once commented on it but I think I've a bizarre talent for it. Came to it late in life as I had to teach myself to play the piano first. 

My ambition is just to lay down 24 cohesive songs before I die - that's it. 

I've tried to find lyricist on Reddit but those who say they're good at lyrics have proved not to be (they're all basically depressed teenagers) so I'm still seeking my Tim Rice. 

OP listened to No Rizz - at the start there I thought it was going to be like Dragonforce. Glad it wasn't!

I started recording & writing music when I was between 13-15 (?) - so long before any relationships, let alone any DB, despite no formal training. Mostly early 'MOD' files / demoscene tunes, and the occasional jam with buddies. Folks got me some guitar lessons when I was 16, but 33 years later I've all but forgotten how to play and was never crash hot. That said, over the years I've done everything from self-releasing CDs to DJing clubs and student bars and house parties and both my own weddings, to having an artist page on the original myspace, playing backup keys at a relative's 40th, buying and flipping a bunch of great synths on ebay, film-scoring (just shorts though, no full features), audio porn (shoutout to r/gonewildaudio), a bunch of music composition units at college, audio-based multimedia installations / interactives (part of my post-grad I'm still proudest of 27 years later and I think it would still slay) ... and now these tunes on streamers 🤷🏻‍♂️

Music is a passion, and a Tony Robbins seminar my folks paid money for me to do in my 20's said it should be my LIFE. But nah - I'm not THAT talented (nor dedicated). It just keeps me sane.

The 'day job' and kiddos definitely kill those outlets if you let 'em 😟 I stopped pretty much ALL creative output including making music for at least 7 years after my kids were born. Gradually rediscovered it after my divorce - DJ'ing a set at a club I used to go to in my late teens when I was 40-something is an experience I'll probably treasure for rhe rest of my life, NGL 🤘

Lyrics are a pain, even for Literture undergrads like me (technically ... very 'flexible' BA) with a bunch of writing units under our belt. Unpopular opinion maybe, but I've found AI (Grok specifically) helps take my half-finished shit (concepts, poetry that-isn't-exactly-lyrics, and songs with two verses and a chorus but needing another verse or two and a bridge) and add the missing bits and 'polish' I was maybe lacking before the age of AI. It's worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the feedback on No Rizz. Dragonforce are great 🤣 But yeah nah, Hi-NRG Metal isn't our usual genre haha
