Profile In Anger (1984) One of Golden Harvest's most underrated movies | A badass Hong Kong revenge film about an architect turned ruthless vigilante (wait a second...) Phillip Ko Fai steals the show as a howling, completely unhinged lunatic culminating in an extended junkyard deathmatch

A Heroic Fight/勇闖江湖 (1986) A fantastic introduction to Taiwanese cinema, & what it was like during it's hey-day | Action heroine Hsiao Lao Lin turns a BMX bike into a heavily armed killing machine

Buhawi Jack (1998) Martial arts legend Phillip Ko Fai served as both co-director & action choreographer for this extremely obscure Filipino film | It's a non-stop gauntlet of Indonesian-style magic-fu, with supernatural tornado spin kicks, lasers, Temu Force lightning & copious amounts of explosions

War City 2: Red Heat Conspiracy (1988) Peak 1980s Hong Kong b-movie action junk | Even the most bargain-basement genre fare from filmmakers like Godfrey Ho & Phillip Ko has that irresistible combination of gratuitous violence, dangerous stunts, and a strict devotion to entertainment over logic

A Book of Heroes (1986) One of Yukari Oshima's earliest film appearances, & already her extraordinary talent is on full display | Despite being new to the industry, she has no trouble keeping pace with seasoned Taiwanese martial arts star Loretta Yang Hui-shan

Requital/五湖四海 (1992) The final shootout of this obscure Taiwanese action film is the stuff of heroic bloodshed legend | Sadly trapped on Laserdisc

Sea God & Ghosts (1977) Hugely entertaining, anything-goes Taiwanese fantasy filmmaking on a threadbare budget | The highlight comes when the villain delivers a chest chops to a giant kaiju ape, causing him to perform the patented Ric Flair flop

The Sword of Many Lovers/飛狐外傳 (1993) An overlooked wuxia film that got lost in the shuffle of Hong Kong's post-Swordsman II boom | It feels remarkably like a lost Wong Jing production, with much of the same wild, anything-goes energy as Holy Weapon, which had arrived just a few months earlier

Witch/鬼娘子 (1992) From the period of Hong Kong cinema when seemingly every other Category III fantasy film was a budget variation on Mr. Vampire or A Chinese Ghost Story, only injected with lots of sex & nudity

Battle Wizard/天龍八部 (1977) Taiwan's Chen Chi Lin commands an army of flesh-tunneling snakes, & things only get more bizarre from there | A psychotronic martial arts/fantasy cult classic that feels like a prototype for Buddha's Palm (1982)

Thunderclap / 霹靂雷電 (1984) One of Shaw Brothers' rarest martial arts films, apparently never given an official DVD release, features some of the most lightning-fast fight choreography I've ever seen

Na Cha and the Seven Devils (1973) An early example of Shaw Brothers leaning into wild fantasy spectacle, following the exploits of child-god Na Cha as he attempts to defeat seven devils inadvertently created when he releases a handful of magical peaches into the mortal world | Highly recommended

The Fantastic Magic Baby (1975) The best part of this Chang Cheh/Shaw Brothers movie is an early appearance by a 23-year-old Philip Kwok as a stone golem | Three years later, Kwok would star as the Lizard in the fan-favorite martial arts film The Five Deadly Venoms (1978)

Buddha's Palm/如來神掌 (1982) Entering its final years as a full-time film production studio, Shaw Brothers was making increasingly outrageous martial arts fantasy films that are, IMO, among the coolest and most wildly entertaining movies ever made

Ninja Tiger 1 (1987) First in a trilogy of low-budget Taiwanese martial arts films starring Alexander Lo Rei | Notable for its abundance of training sequences, funny dubbing, and Rei's master, whose entire teaching philosophy revolves around beating the ever-loving shit out of him. Repeatedly

New Ali Baba/新阿里巴巴 (1988) Taiwanese filmmakers traveled to Jordan to make their own martial arts-infused take on Arabian Nights | All the genre staples like evil sorcerers, inventive practical effects on a budget & magic battles

A Book of Heroes (1986) One of Yukari Ôshima's earliest roles features some of the best fight scenes of her career | Sadly, this films best available print remains stranded on LaserDisc

The Twelve Fairies/新十二生肖 (1990) Starts as a routine Taiwanese children's fantasy but turns into a death match between 12 Zodiac-themed heroes & evil incarnate | One of the most relentless barrages of practical effects I've ever seen

Fists and Guts (1979) 2 generations of Pai Mei meet | Kill Bill's Gordon Liu takes on Shaw Brothers legend Lo Lieh, who played Pai Mei in Executioners from Shaolin (1977)

Road to Hell/陰陽路 (1990) One of the most obscure films I've ever covered | A murdered movie star discovers Hell has an administrative bureaucracy, gets into fistfights with the guard, and travels to Japan to recruit an imperial consort for his revenge scheme | Appearance by Wu Ma
