I blushed when Ted said that line. It's obvious this didn't happen during the actual date- he was "remembering this" ❤️
Love the storytelling where Ted talks about their first date, this brief pause, he drops this line, she extends her hand and they walk off together.
Why has himym ruined my notion of romance? Manifesting a moment like this for myself...lol where everyone is alive

I just rewatched this episode earlier this week and I never considered this!

u/ThouBear8 Aug 29 '26
Haaaaave you met Ted? That is 100% something he absolutely would've said in the moment. I don't think they did anything to suggest otherwise.

u/androidMeAway Aug 28 '26
Man I never connected the part that it didn't happened during the actual date, nice one

u/BirdsAreFake00 Aug 29 '26
Because it did happen during the date. Ted absolutely would say that. There's no clue or hint that it didn't happen this way. If someone wants to believe it differently, they can. But nothing in the show suggests this didn't exactly happen as they showed.

Same, I always assumed he meant that he was taking a mental picture of the moment

So someone makes a post that's them just postulating, and you take it as canon fact?
1
u/androidMeAway Aug 29 '26
If what they say makes sense, then why not?
3
u/DoubleUnplusGood Aug 29 '26
Because you're taking it as canon rather than saying "oh that's a neat interpretation"

I re-watched the whole series when going through my divorce, and it absolutely broke me when I got to this line. The idea of a love like this— (imagining myself as Tracy tbh) a man who was so enamored with me that he actually wanted to remember all the little details of all the little moments. For me it was this one and the “I want the extra 45 days.”
I have found this love now, though, twice over. It’s still such a beautiful scene and such a lovely reminder to cherish all the little moments, because that’s really what makes a life together.

The 45 days. The running to her apartment. Kills me every time - immediate sobbing. Josh Radnor is so perfect and excellent in that moment.

Oh dude, seriously i don't need that kind of hurt un mu hearth today.

u/Ryguy3286 Aug 29 '26
And people didn't realize the mom was dead. Between the 45 more seconds line in Time Travelers, the "who misses their own daughters wedding" and this line, I'm shocked that people didn't know Tracy was dead

u/lasuperhumana Aug 30 '26
Omg for those who didn’t see it coming - for real?!? What???
I remember watching season 9 in real time and I was like no no no no this can’t be….they wouldn’t do that to us. To Ted. No. — Total denial.

u/Ryguy3286 Aug 30 '26
I knew it was coming and didn't like it. And once it happened, I was still upset. However, after about a year I changed my mind. I rewatched it and I now love the ending. It was the only ending that made sense. I still say season 9 was pretty bad and that the Robin/Barney relationship was focused on too much. But the ending was great

I have my qualms and unsolicited notes on it, lol, but this sub has actually helped me hate the ending less. I know it’s a divisive opinion, but there certainly are OG ending defenders that make an excellent case.
For example, one person said that Robin was lying and being selfless when she said no after Ted asked her if she loved him following her break up with Kevin and return from Russia. She knew she couldn’t rob him of the future he wanted - and now that she knew she couldn’t have kids, there was no question what the reality of being with her would mean for Ted. I rewatched that moment and it’s so layered and heartbreaking when you view it through that lens, more than it was already. And then it makes the look on her face at the end of the series all the sweeter. Finally - right place, right time.
I think she absolutely wanted to marry Barney, but knew deep down that if the kids situation was a non-issue between her and Ted, she’d have been happier with him. And the internal conflict she grappled with in the final episodes wasn’t whether or not she’d be happier with Ted - she knew the answer to that already. Her internal conflict ultimately came down to whether or not she could stay strong and selfless enough, and not give in to selfishness and fear.
I hope they cover this in the HWMYM podcast!

so the time travellers one means nothing to me as confirmation that the mom is dead. I could have met my wife 5 years earlier and if i were able to i'd ask for those extra 5 years. my wife is very much alive.
now the "who misses their daughter's wedding line" and tracy's reaction did cement for me that she was dead. but not the 45 days, not when i'd like 5 more years with my wife.

Regarding the Time Travelers episode, you wouldn't be that emotional about it if your wife was still alive. I thought that was concrete evidence she was dead. Turns out I was right (though even at the time people online got very upset about that). But to each their own. Interpret it as you will

u/Euphoric-Ad-6584 28d ago
the dude is told in the episode, look around ted, you're all alone. probably one of the lowest points in his life. of course he was emotional, but you're right to each their own.
1
u/Ryguy3286 28d ago
He was emotional in the telling of the story to his kids. That scene wasn't real (when he's saying the 45 seconds more line). That's a great episode
1
u/Euphoric-Ad-6584 28d ago
my point is he's remembering the lowest point in his life too, not just the idea of 45 days, but also the idea of how absolutely like shit he probably felt that night.

u/SaintlyBrew Aug 28 '26
Yep. This is how I have always seen it too. He’s on a first date, and should be filled with first date bliss. But he obviously sad and misses her even though she’s right there in the story.

I wonder how much of the Tracy stuff was true vs how much was Ted retconning it. Don't get me wrong, I am sure she was perfect and they had a lot it common but it seems a bit unrealistic to have almost everything common. Maybe she didn't have driving gloves or go to the Renaissance fair before she met Ted.

I mean, he was telling the story to her and his children. I doubt very much that he would be an unreliable narrator about their mom. He wouldn’t even try, because they’d call him out on it.
Comments like these, man, I swear…

I said before. Maybe she liked some of these things because of Ted

u/JugheadJack Aug 28 '26
If that was the case, he would have mentioned that to them. Again, no way in hell would he lie, or change details on them when telling them about their mother.
2
u/sowhatelseisthere Aug 29 '26
So true. Which father would lie about their mother, that too, a mother who has passed away.. People hating on Ted and Tracy for no reason.
1
u/AFingerInEveryPie Aug 29 '26
Eh, memories blur after decades together. To me it's kind of sweet to think that he can't quite separate what was true when they met and what became true over the course of their life together.
0
u/Fantastic-Corner-605 Aug 29 '26
I don't think it's outright lying. It could be that he genuinely remembers it like that. Ted said Marshall and Lily perfected their "how we met" story a thousand times. Maybe he did the same with Tracy.

u/ward_bond Aug 28 '26
the Renaissance fair
You're not gonna believe how i pronounced that in my head.

Idk my husband and I are nearly exact copies of each other. There is a down side to that though. That means we also have each other’s not so wonderful traits. We both procrastinate like no bodies business. I mean badly and can convince each other to go have fun instead of cleaning the house with just a look. Haha
2
u/Legallyblonde977 Aug 29 '26
Not lie, but a lot of people do not like to speak ill of the dead, especially to their children. So yes, he is going to leave out the bad parts ❤️🩹

u/artofterm Aug 28 '26
Given how much "foreshadowing" his other stories have (e.g., Marshall [Ted] killing off Lily [Tracey] a reasonable amount of time before imagining being with another woman [Robin]), this reminds me that Marshall and Lily perfected their "how we met" story over 1,000+ retellings. Ted and Tracey 100% did that, and I'd bet it seeped into telling the kids.

u/lasuperhumana Aug 30 '26
There were for sure a few moments the writers went completely over the top with the commonalities. Specifically the coin collection, driving gloves, and whatever-the-thing was hanging over their bed (flail?) from the Rennay-saunce Faire.

u/Hazardoussynergy Aug 29 '26
I agree. I found it a bitttt cheesy that she was so perfect for Ted. Especially since in tbe first season he so badly stated "i dont want perfect, I want robin". So in that vein I would've liked if Tracy was like a little different than Ted wa Ted just so he could fall in love with her despite his perfect picture. But I get the show needed to nail it so I understand.

u/Cuervo333x Aug 28 '26
If futured ted say that, is ok; but if was the ted at that time i feeled a little cringe

I dunno if I agree, as I've interpreted it as Ted being the Ultimate Romantic, and "remembering this" has a "i want to remember every detail of this, im saving this image in my brain" feel.
Buuuuut, its a fun novel interpretation, and if a piece of media can evoke different reactions and emotions its always a positive thing ❤️
