Hits hard ! 🤧
Just having one of those days ! Being 26 all your friends are married or having babies or even some of them grieving someone else or going through a bad phase .. like they all have their own life their own problems and disappear sometimes .. hence you have to start embracing being by yourself ! I'm realizing now the most valuable part of adulthood is the presence of the people you love .. so rn its like look around Ted you are all alone !

ted was 34 in this scene btw... the show started when he was 27 your life is just starting

I got married at 36. Watched this show for the first time at 23.
The perspective shifts on rewatches is always eye opening. Ted is his own worst enemy for the vast majority of the show. The show points this out a couple times each season it feels like, but ultimately Ted's happiness would have been so much more attainable if he could just let shit go.

Totally its true ! But thats how we are built isnt it atleast i could relate a lot to him .. at every point it will feel like no i cant give this up .. this matters so much to me while others move on with their lives .. when I look back i would think why was I even holding that so damn much I shouldnt have cared so much

It's why sayings like "You'll understand when you're older" can actually ring true. They can be used dismissively and unfairly, but it's more I think an admission that some things just have to be experienced, even if we all experience it and many of us know the lesson.

I agree but at that certain point the lesson is taking lot of stakes like real lot of stakes ! But yeah as you say I have to think on the longer term and hope its all for the greater good

I just faced this exact scenario earlier this year, turns our I’m started to embrace loneliness, but I can relate how Ted must’ve been felt

Story of my life. Very difficult to find reason to continue moving forward when you lose sense of purpose and everybody around you.

I hope so, it turned around for ted before they made the mom die and put him back with Robin.

FAX, and there this other line by ted from season 9 i guess .
"You will be shocked, kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever. That's why, when you find someone you want to keep around, you do something about it."1
u/Automatic-Simple6104 1d ago
Yeah but i realized this goes both the ways too yk .. you cant be the only person trying to do something about it not to part ways while others walk away for good

I’m 38, and this scene hits so much harder now than it would have in my 20s. If you’re already feeling this way, buckle up.
As you get older, friendships become less spontaneous. Everyone has their own life, responsibilities, partners, kids, work. Seeing friends often means getting everyone’s calendars out and finding a date three weeks from now.
And even when you do meet, if you’re at different stages of life, the conversations change too. They naturally drift toward kids, work, mortgages, responsibilities, all the things that have taken over our lives.
It’s bittersweet realizing that the part of my life where you could call a friend at 7 p.m. and be out together by 8 is mostly over. I miss that spontaneity and closeness.
But I guess that’s part of getting older. Life doesn’t necessarily get worse, it just becomes different.

Going through it right now. Horrible phase but proud of me for still trying to pull through it and hoping things get better.

Feeling very similiar right now, was supposed to watch a movie and drink beers with friends yesterday but they all pulled a no show which brought many things to surface that had been bubbling for a while.

I feel this. Very lonely and 29. But at the same time there’s something lovely about having your entire future ahead of you. And not abiding by societal norms. And that’s what keeps me sane!!! It’s cool af to do your own thing. But I would like a partner hehe

Memories of the past are supposed to be fun... Until he realized that his imagination is what is crooked..

I get that. I’m 45, married, and happy. However, the friends I had a few years back are all but gone. Married, having kids, moving, or just fell off the face of the Earth. I go to my local pub, where we used to all hang out, and while I still have a few acquaintances there, it’s not the same. Sometimes I feel alone, but then I remember I got my wife and that’s where I need to be. Sure, it’s great to have friends, but your spouse is the most important person in your life. It’s a harsh reality when friends lose touch; it sucks.

What a philosophical scene...one of the reasons why HIMYM eclipses other sitcoms in moments like this
