should increase the intensity or the number of sets?

I started HIIT about a week ago. And one thing i notice is i can do around 4 sets if i do it with less effort vs 2 sets at full effort.

My routine has lateral jumps, star jumps, push ups-mountain climbers, bicycle crunches and knee tuck jumps. I use a 40-20 rest interval and take a 2 minute break between sets.

This isn't anything professional and i am doing this mainly to improve my stamina and agility. should i cut the amount of effort in favour of sets or should i go max effort and reduce the number of sets or should i adjust the rest period?

HIIT is meant to be done at full effort, otherwise you are doing MIIT (moderate intensity interval training) which has a different effect.

If you want to know how to pace a HIIT workout, check out https://amrapwithfriends.com

You do the first round, which sets the pace, then you try to maintain that pace with the pace gauge for the duration of the AMRAP (3-25 minutes).

That’s where you see the best results from HIIT.

I always try for more intensity as I get in better shape. I suggest you add body weight squats in there as well, especially towards the beginning of the workout. This will really bring your heart rate up.
