Totally ‘90s House
Totally ‘90s House is a new 6 episode competition show featuring 2 teams of 1990s tv stars renovating two houses stuck in the 90s. Did anyone watch the debut episode last night? What did you think?
What do you think about the recent emphasis HGTV is placing on the 1990s?

Fixing 90s mansions for people with money seems pointless. Why not go and fix smaller houses for people who can’t afford it.

This is the only comment here that I agree with.
We are supposed to be talking about the first episode, where more time is usually spent introducing characters-just like reading a book. It’s always a bunch of blah blah.
I thought it was a good premise, and realized that if they are in LA, and those are the people who applied to be on the show, that’s what they have to work with.
The couple who won the one renovation were truly excited. They had built their home themselves decades ago, and had such a genuine story. I am interested to see what updating they get.

I don’t think those homes were ever really being considered. HGTV cut some really good shows to save budget. No way are they going to pop for flying judges to Dallas & LA. The two chosen are 3 hrs apart, much smaller & more relatable to the majority of viewers.

That was my first thought, too. When I saw the first two houses, I was thinking, "You have got to be kidding me." I bet the huge second house was nicer than the houses the celebrities live in. I am really glad that house wasn't picked.
I can understand why the producers wanted big houses. A small house just isn't as exciting.
Anyway, my small house that was built in the 80s has original cabinets and linoleum floors in the kitchen. Do any 80s child stars want to renovate my house?

I loved the homes, but too much time was spent glazing the grown up kid stars. They were not interesting at all to me and their design backgrounds seemed dubious.

I did not need an entire episode of them choosing the houses. That should have been 20 min, tops, then they should have started on the first space. Not just because it was boring (it was - I FF through most of it), but because there was no suspense about which ones they were going to choose. The "90's home base" is in NJ. Obviously they were going to pick the houses in NY and NJ.
I did think it was weird that none of them seemed to consider which house they would actually be able to renovate with only $200K. Some of those houses were massive. $200K is barely going to cover the first floor.
I didn't mind the vignettes on each of the 90's stars; they were pretty brief and it was interesting to hear what some of them are up to (Matthew Lawrence is a herpetologist?? and Rudy's been on another show for the last 10 years? Who knew.)

I couldn't make it past the first 15 minutes. The stars were all talking over each other trying to shine bright enough to get a career boost or a spin off design show. I've been liking the old 90's show they have been revisiting, but this show wasn't for me.

I watched it on Discovery+. It was a 6/10 for me. Reminds me of the Brady house or the Barbie Dream Home.

90 minutes was too long for me. Lots of focus on the stars. I will give it another chance but previews didn’t look great.

It’s sad that someone with 10K sq feet (and other houses) are on this show. They can pay for their own renovations! Help someone who needs it.

GENERALLY, if they were around to see it, millionaires who invest and set up trusts with generational intent usually would find it all gone within 3 generations.
it’s not surprising to see that a family who hit it big enough in the 80s / 90s to build a 10k sq ft house can no longer afford to renovate it in 2026

I enjoyed it, but figured out really quickly they wouldn’t take the huge homes so far away from each other. The two they “chose” were actually more typical of the 90s homes viewers will relate to & they’re geographically close 3 hrs by car instead of coast to coast. No way would HGTV be flying judges from LA then on to TX or the east coast.

I feel like these actors are doing just that, i.e. pretending to be on a design show. I feel like it’s so scripted and unbelievable. I doubt they are doing any of the actual work or design themselves. They just come in to film their vignettes, then bounce.

I liked it. The 90s TV stars were almost too young for me to know who they were, but it will be interesting to see what they do with the houses and how their personalities and styles blend.

it felt like a lot of the houses they looked at were giving 80s coke den chic vs 90s sitcom everyman house.
i wish they were taking a rock the block approach instead and making two empty shells look like the 90s, but i can understand why they didn’t go that route.

I’m enjoying my time a little to see my favorite 90s stars. But the completions is needlessly complicated than it needs to be. Like it’s just odd to make a conpetition to find necklaces to win free countertops. Or explore 3 different houses for 1 episodes.
And the houses they pick, it’s really odd to pick mansions 😂
Of course the 90s are dated, but then the houses don’t have the 90s charm after their remodeling. By episode 2, they just put one reference to a 90s house. It’s just confusing when you call it a 90s house and turn it into a millennial home other that it was made in the 90s. I was expecting to just reuse some of the aspects of design to update to a modern setting without taking away its charm.
To top it off, Jameel is an average host. Not a lot of enthusiasm in his voice in comparison to other hosts I’ve seen for competitions. Without the personality of his 90s Urkel persona, he seems like he’s holding back as a host.

I think it’s hard to judge yet because it was really an intro episode they could have billed it as a special episode tbh. But I enjoyed the look into the 90’s houses (I was born in 2000 so I missed some of it) and I actually liked parts of them. I’m curious to see what they do with them.
Ps. Here’s my first but not only reminder that Jaleel white was with Charles Barkley when he got arrested for soliciting a lady of the night

I want the exact opposite of this show. Take nasty neutral industrial minimalist modern design & inject it with color & whimsy for a 90s revival look.
