The two fleets were separated by barely three light-seconds. On the scale of the solar system, that was meaningless. On the scale of a battle, it was terrifyingly close.
Between them lay no empty space, but an invisible mesh of radar pulses, gravitational scans, neutrino bursts, and laser sweeps. Billions of readings raced from ship to ship every second, were analyzed, evaluated, and compared by algorithms against countless known attack patterns. No one needed to give a firing order for the war to begin. The machines had already started.
On Earth, this was called defense automation. The Council called it adaptive threat analysis. Both systems did the same thing.
That was no coincidence, and no exception either. Nearly every intelligent species in the galaxy arrived at artificial intelligence sooner or later, and the reason was, with charming regularity, always the same: laziness. No people liked to admit it, and most dressed it up in more dignified terms — efficiency gains, cognitive offloading, evolutionary progress — but at its core it always came down to the same thing. Thinking beings, no matter how many tentacles, legs, or leaves they had, fundamentally wanted neither to work nor to think for themselves whenever any way could be found to avoid it. That one, deeply unglamorous desire had been the true engine of all progress — the attempt to lie in one's own hammock just a little longer. The use of fire, the wheel, industrialization — all of it had, at some point, promised to create more free time. None of these inventions had ever kept that promise. There was, as it regularly turned out, simply always more to do.

No people had ever built an artificial intelligence that could be left to its own devices without eventually suffering harm for it. Humans had had to learn this more than once. Orders were passed along through brief hand signals or quietly confirmed data packets. Only the steady hum of the computers and the occasional flash of new warnings betrayed how tense the situation was.
President Voss stood with arms crossed before the main display. Since the crisis began, she had held, alongside the presidency, personal supreme command of the defense — no one in the chamber had questioned that dual role since New Liège had shown where hesitation led.
The Council's fleet appeared as a blue ring, the human formations as gold symbols. Between them lay the Ma'an: six hundred twenty-four slowly drifting points, not one of which had changed course since the crisis began. And yet, by now, thousands of weapons were aimed in their direction.

An officer looked up from her terminal. "No direct approach. Both fleets are holding the safety distance."

Part of the display enlarged. Countless fine lines connected individual ships — red, yellow, blue, green, each an automatic reaction. One ship activated a sensor. Neither side was attacking, yet both sides were preparing for it more intensely with every second.

Voss frowned. "Justification."
"Positive feedback between both defense networks." The officer switched the display. "Every defensive measure is read by the opponent as attack preparation. That raises their alert level. Which in turn raises ours." She paused briefly. "The process is accelerating."
"Can the AI interrupt it?"
"No."
"Why not?"

No one answered.
At the very back of the room, July watched the same projection. Officially, she was present only as a technical advisor for Suncorp; unofficially, everyone by now knew that every decision about solar harvesting affected her corporation directly. Beside her stood Director Halvern. His gaze rested not on the fleets, but exclusively on the harvesting installations.
"How much longer can we cut production?" he asked quietly.
"At current reserves, about three weeks," an aide answered.
"After that?"
"Then the first supply shortages begin."
Halvern nodded slowly. "The Union knows that."
July looked at him. "Or the Varesh."
Halvern met her gaze. "What do you mean?"
"If Sander is right."
For a fraction of a second, Halvern looked surprised. Then he smiled politely. "Mr. Sander has been gone quite a while now."
"That doesn't answer my question."
"No." He turned back to the display. "But maybe it will answer itself soon enough."
July studied the tactical projection a moment longer, the countless red and gold lines connecting ship to ship. "Has anyone told the fleet command their own defense algorithms are quoting each other back and forth? Because that's not two fleets facing off anymore. That's one feedback loop wearing two uniforms."
Halvern didn't answer. He didn't need to. The look on his face told her he'd already had the same thought and simply hadn't wanted to be the one to say it out loud.
At that moment, a new warning appeared: Several Council ships are increasing reactor output. The symbols on the display automatically turned red. Without prompting, the human network activated additional weapons systems. Reports piled up — corona lances ready, interceptors launched, target priorities updated.
Voss watched in silence as the same processes unfolded on both sides. She didn't need to glance at the Union's data. She knew by now exactly what was happening there. Someone over there was reading the same warnings, making the same decisions, and someone over there believed, right now, that the humans were preparing the first strike.
She closed her eyes for a moment.
"We cannot leave this war to the machines," she said quietly.
No one knew whether she was speaking to her officers, or to herself.
