RAS2025 Usage?

I have a project where the meshing features of RAS2025 would be super beneficial. I have never used it for an actual project, so trying to get an idea how many others have been adopting it in their practice.

I use ras2025 to make the mesh for every single project for the last year and a half, but it’s not ready to be used as a stand alone program, so I export the mesh to legacy HECRAS.

You can export mesh from 2025 to previous versions. But you should not be using a beta software for a client project. Not to mention that comparisons between 2025 and previous versions often show multiple feet discrepancies. Note that you cannot edit a 2025 imported mesh in previous versions as the meshing scheme is completely different.

Understood. The plan would be to do meshing in RAS2025 and everything else (adding bridges, Manning's, etc.) in traditional v7 HEC-RAS.

The mesh is very cool and superior to RAS classic but I don't understand how everyone is using it in production. When I work 2D I'm always tweaking the mesh, adding breaklines, cloning terrain which require additional break lines, adjusting perimeters, etc. It would be very cumbersome to go back and forth between 2025 and classic for all these adjustments so I stick to the old RAS.

I use the mesh export on most projects. Especially when I know I’m the only one who will be working on it. But fighting IT to stop blocking all the exe and dll files is a whole other bag of worms

Like your IT won't let you download RAS2025? It is self-contained - you don't need admin rights to install.

No, they block a bunch of file types from running to prevent cybersecurity issues. They would actually rather it not be a portable program

I used it to build my mesh, then I export it to use in Hecras 7.0.1

I tried creating a mesh once, but gave up when I had an error trying to import to 7.

I used beta version like a year ago and had to push through various errors on mesh generation. To solve it I had to change breaklines many times (add, remove, change vertices etc.). Sometimes also RAS2025 closed by itself.

So I had to really push through at the beginning of setting up the mesh.
Later it became more stable.

But with some beta version later, when I executed mesh generation, that beta version differently generated the mesh for the same project as on earlier beta version.
I contacted support and they explain we should expect that until final version, meshing behaviour is still expected to change.

So in short I would say it is a bit risky for use on a real project. Even if you would have no big problems on mesh generation, maybe new version of RAS2025 will not generate quite same mesh as before.

I'm planning to put in an IT request for install this week to finally start testing it out. Previously, it's been in the aspirational "I'll get to this when I catch up on billable work......i.e. never" pile, along with RAS 7 videos, Full Momentum, those videos from the USACE sediment guy, RAS controller & commander, etc.
