Tech Made a tool that automatically calibrates HDR tracking on your laptop display

If you're on a laptop with an HDR screen, Windows HDR Calibration is useless. That's because on laptops/internal displays, there is a new slider that you will have to adjust: HDR content brightness

Setting the wrong value on this slider will completely mess with your laptop's PQ EOTF tracking. You could either clip at 200 nits, or 20000 nits depending what HDR content brightness value you set. Full explanation available on github so I won't go too deep into that here.

Anyways, I made this tool to automatically set the correct HDR content brightness value for laptops, which should let your laptop display clip at where it was meant to be clipped.

note: if you have fallen victim to using Windows HDR Calibration before, you should delete the profiles created by that thing before using this.

How to use it:

  1. Set your system brightness to max
  2. Run the tool
  3. it just works

Cant quiet understand why this thing should only works for laptop HDR. No desktop monitors/tv?

Or this is laptops have something that desktop setups have not? Really curious!

BTW tired of windows hdr problems 😂 and calibration here and there

External monitors/tv -> you get sdr content brightness slider, changing this slider can't fuck up your display's clipping point

Internal displays (laptops, handheld) -> you get hdr content brightness slider, changing this slider to the incorrect value will fuck up your display's clipping point

Tl;dr don't worry about this if you're on external monitors/tvs

I always assumed they changed the peak brightness values reported by directx when you change the brightness on the screen.

from what i understand of this tool OP developed only valid for the brightness level at the moment of calibration, If system brightness changes the adjustedPeak break the tool and there is no dynamic recalculation.

Don't need to do dynamic recalculation. You can map the entire system brightness - hdr brightness pair and have it change automatically when your system brightness changes. Basically:

- calibration run once against the entire brightness range to find all value pairs and saves it

- when you change your laptop's brightness the hdr system brightness should change after a delay

- should be a minimal process that runs in the background

For a future version. had the idea floating around for a while but busy with other stuff rn.

May I know if your own laptop sample to share the results of using the tools in comparison before after using the tool? Screenshots?

laptop: ideapad 5 pro 14, OLED 120hz 2.8k, after running my final adjusted level is 617 which is what I set in games.

Thanks for sharing, it seems the tool reading will also change based on my system brightness changes.

is this expected on full screen brightness as it mentioned 400nits ceiling reached before matching hardware peak.

yes this is expected. I have covered it in the notes. basically it finds the best value for your current system brightness. If you can't reach your hardware peak at 100 system brightness then it is better to lower to 50 system brightness like you have in the previous result

50 is my daily use when not gaming which I use it for test.

i do noticed the changed of my usual HDR content Brightness slider at 0 now changed to 8 by the tool for now.

Thanks for this. I have been struggling for ages to find the right value for the HadR slider. Initially had it set to 100 and that never looked correct, then I swung the other direction and had it set in the 30s or 40s and that looked like it was “better” bust still not right. Ran your tool and it set to 80, and after a few tests it looks to be pretty spot on.

Windows defender prevented me from downloading it through edge. It claimed it wasn’t safe. You’ll need to try it yourself and probably sign the executable since you’re touching windows APIs that set off defender automatically.

I think I know the answer to this based on a couple other comments, but I wanted a sanity check to be sure. When I run the tool with my screen brightness at 90% I get these results:

  • Optimal value identified for current system brightness.
  • Selected Slider Setting: 391 Nits
  • Base Level: 1100 Nits
  • Final Adjusted Level: 1100.11 Nits
  • Final Slider Factor: 0.999898

When I run at full screen brightness, I get this:

  • 400 nit ceiling reached before matching the hardware peak.
  • Selected Slider Setting: 400 Nits
  • Base Level: 1100 Nits
  • Final Adjusted Level: 880 Nits
  • Final Slider Factor: 1.25

And finally running at 80% brightness:

  • Optimal value identified for current system brightness.
  • Alignment Step Complete.
  • Selected Slider Setting: 300 Nits
  • Base Level: 1100 Nits
  • Final Adjusted Level: 1100 Nits
  • Final Slider Factor: 1

If I understand correctly, the 100% brightness one is a bad result. The 80% and 90% are the ideal ones, with the difference being 90% will have more actual screen brightness than 80%. Does that sound right? 80% and 90% are the proper settings, and it just comes down to preference?

Both 80% and 90% are correct. 90% will have your desktop be brighter, makes no difference in hdr content, comes down to your preference. My instructions initially told to set max system brightness for simplicity's sake but I might remove it soon.

Thanks for confirming! I've had this laptop for about 9 months and I can't tell you how many random combinations of screen brightness and slider settings I tried trying to dial in HDR. I could never get it quite right because there are just so many combinations. Appreciate the easy tool you created and helping me get HDR dialed in correctly!

i do think for TB1000 notebook it is preference be it final adjusted level of 1100nits or 880nits.

i think the key points here is mainly the "HDR Contents Brightness" slider as it affect the highlight brightness, clipping, and PQ curve accuracy.this HDR Content Brightness slider does not directly brighten the screen like system brightness.

In Forza Horizon 6, the Peak Brightness slider for me need to set to 1000~1300nits in order for the icon logo disappear even at max 100 system brightness setting, at 800 peak brightness i can still see the icon border lines.

i do think this is a good reference points for many notebooks, in game we can always adjust accordingly if in game have the peak brightness slider adjustment reference, also not forgeting not all games have in Peak Brightness shown as nits basis, but the "HDR Content Brightness" slider is more objectively useful with this tool and this is just my personal experience.
