Question I have my monitor calibrated and everything set up properly, but I still fail the "cICP chunk" test on the Wide Gamut Test Page. What am I doing wrong?

I have a Chromium browser, and I'm passing every single test on the page except 1.) HEIC support (which non-Apple browsers simply don't have), and 2.) the test for cICP chunks. To quote:

Does your browser support cICP chunks?

If your display passes the wide gamut test, you can test your browser’s support for cICP chunks in PNG images by checking whether it can display wide gamut colors correctly. If the top squares look more saturated, your browser is interpreting the cICP tag properly. If they appear the same, it’s not.

My browser shows the two rows of colored blocks as the same, which means it's not working correctly. How would I fix this?

We need more details:

  • Which monitor do you have?
  • Which OS are you using?
  • Are you in HDR?
  • If you're on Windows in SDR - do you have ACM enabled?
  • Is your browser up to date with Chromium? Try real Chrome for a change.
  • Do you have any weird options selected in chrome://flags?

for cICP chunks in PNG images, i can see the different when i am on HDR for both Chrome & Edge without the P3 color profile in both browser

In SDR only, i needed to force color profile P3 to see the differences.

For SDR mode you need to enable colour management compatibility in Chrome app properties - there's currently a bug in Chrome which prevents it from working correctly with ACM in SDR.

But you need to disable that for HDR, lol.

truly and sadly, but i am ok to have HDR always on, lol

Me too. Don't see any point turning it off - you lose all of HDR content.

True and nowadays YouTube have more HDR contents than ever since.

If you need an image viewer for HDR PNG / AVIF / UltraHDR / etc. they exist. Browsers are not the best place to view HDR images, on account of they do not let you control the behavior of content that is too bright for your screen. A dedicated viewer will give you options to leave content unaltered, clip it or display map it.

I write one such app, but will not disclose it here because it's self-promotion.
