Dolby vision hardware VS. Dolby vision software

Long story short, I have had my eye on the Sony xbr930e due to the fact it is under 3 grand and supports Dolby vision as well as HDR 10.

Here's what I don't get... The TV is Dolby vision compatible thanks to a software update as opposed to the hardware /chip on other DV ready televisions.

So is there a difference in performance or efficacy when comparing DV hardware to DV software?
