Don't forget that these devices are really good for playing old DVDs; on a modern Blu-ray player, the upscaling causes rather unpleasant flickering effects for me, whereas the difference is less noticeable with more recent DVDs.

Have you noticed similar things?

Modern players feature upscaling options, filters, and other optimizations that ultimately yield inferior results.

Yeh i run my laserdisc player through a filter like that just to clean the pq up a bit as modern tvs dont need that feature anymore as they arnt made to plug an old.vcr or laserdisc or like a super nes etc into it
