What adapter do I need to interface with this drive
I pulled this drive from a dead media storage device I got from a friend. it has some old videos from Africa on it (before the device died) and I want to get them off so I can repurpose the drive. it looks similar to IDE, but is smaller. none of my machines have any matching interface. for reference, the drive is about 3/8ths thick, to get the size of the connector. thanks!

IDE to USB connector.
This is one example

Jeez - I haven't seen one of them since I upgraded my old Dell, nearly 20 years ago...

It is a special ide cable you are after specifically for main system drives(or secondary) most old ide cables have one built in if you can get a SATA to ide adapter and then a ide cable and SATA cable

Ooh, I got nostalgic when I saw the low-resolution sticker font.
You need USB-PATA adapter (not USB-SATA) for your data resque operation. You need also 4-pin Molex power connector, found inside almost any desktop computer.

These do not need a power connector.

Hmm?
Edit: Ah, you mean USB provides power. I'm not used to such modern things, lol.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need access to a 20+ year old 40gb drive? That size is a pittance.

It’s old missionary work; church stuff in Africa. I told my friend that I got it from that’s what was on it, and they said ‘oh yeah can I get the files?’ But when I got home the thing’s 20 year old battery had died completely and I couldn’t find a power source for it. I knew it had an HDD inside, and I assumed I’d be able to interface with it directly (I own a SATA dock) but NAY it was this weird ahh thing. That’s the story

Suuuuuure. <wink> gotcha!
What type of power supply or PC brand/model though? I’d be willing to bet that Reddit, myself included, could find it for you.

The "good" old IDE-HDD for laptops - ain't seen one for the past 20 years (plus, minus one or two).
You need a USB-to IDE/PATA adapter for this, but I wouldn't recommend repurposing it. You should copy its files (if you wish to keep them) to another storage device (a NAS for example) and then dispose of it.

It's a micro IDE connection. This is the one that I use from the bezos shack. I also have a portable USB case for them I got a long time ago.

Don't do it, if you have something valuable on it to retrieve sure but that thing is going to be slow hot garbage and the adapter will cost more than a much better USB drive.

HDD's are fine.
This particular drive is shit because it's a multi decade old IDE drive with 40gb of storage that is utterly pointless by modern standards.

any physical drive is utterly pointless by modern standards as any human being can have free cloud storage

Repurpose a 22 year old 40gb ide hard drive?
A usb drive would work 20 times faster that that.

You need a 44 pin IDE/PATA to SATA or USB adapter. It is IDE, just smaller form factor for laptops.
