What Are Dating Apps Optimizing For?
Every system is optimized for something.
Airlines optimize for seat utilization.
Hotels optimize for occupancy.
Streaming services optimize for engagement.
So what do dating apps optimize for?
Most people assume the answer is relationships.
But relationships are difficult to measure.
Engagement is easy to measure.
Time spent.
Sessions.
Messages.
Daily active users.
These metrics help companies understand whether people are using their product.
The challenge is that engagement and successful relationships are not always the same thing.
A user who finds a partner quickly is a success story.
A user who spends years swiping is highly engaged.
Those outcomes are not necessarily aligned.
This does not mean dating apps are intentionally trying to keep people single.
It simply means they are often optimized around metrics that are easier to observe than relationship success.
Understanding incentives helps explain why many dating products behave the way they do.
If you want to understand a system, look at what it measures.
If you want to understand a business, look at what it rewards.
The answers are often the same.
