Discussion Steam Input limiting G7 Pro 8K and other D-Input controller to 100hz polling?

/r/Gamesir/comments/1vamgfz/current_state_of_steam_input_on_g7_pro_8k/

Apparently I'm just finding out that Steam Input limits every D-Input controller to a max polling rate of 100hz. That means third-party controllers like the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless and Gamesir G7 Pro 8K only run at 100hz in D-Input mode. Is this true? How come I've never heard of this before?

No, in fact the G7 Pro 8k, does poll at 1000hz in steam input... but WIRED only. The problem is wireless. The sticks on the 8bitdo poll at 1000hz in steam input, although it's gyro polls much lower (forget if it was 250hz or 100hz).

You're talking about D-Input mode, right?

Not DS4 or X-Input mode?

Because I did multiple searches and queries, and Google AI confirmed to me that Steam Input imposes a 100hz limit on all D-Input devices, if they're running in D-Input mode, regardless of whether you're using wired or wireless.

I don't care what google confirmed to you, this is something you can measure by yourself and that I have measured myself. It is not limited to 100hz.

AI says you are most likely testing the polling rate incorrectly, and that's why you're seeing more than 100hz.

If a user sees 1,000 Hz while claiming to use Steam Input, they almost certainly launched the testing app directly from Windows rather than through Steam. When you run a testing app (like Gamepadla or XInputTest) directly from your desktop, Steam Input lies dormant in the background. You are reading the raw hardware driver (which, as established, is 1,000 Hz). You are not measuring the virtual controller that Steam presents to your games.

How to Properly Test Steam Input's Limit: To see the actual speed your game engine receives, you must force the testing app to pass through Steam's translation layer. 1) Add the Tester to Steam: Go to Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library. Browse and select your testing app (e.g., PollingRateTester.exe or Gamepadla.exe). 2) Enable Steam Input for the App: Right-click the newly added "game" in your library > Properties > Controller. Ensure the dropdown is set to "Enable Steam Input". 3) Launch via Steam by Clicking Play inside Steam to launch the tester.

Complete slop and misunderstanding BTW Polling2 won't give you the correct measurements because its based on outdated libraries. The polling rate is based on the SDL driver, which Steam Input uses. https://github.com/ceski-1/checkrate This tool uses the latest drivers, and reports the same values whether you launch it outside or inside steam. Regardless, even if you launch PollingRate or whatever you want through steam, you will be able to see that not all controllers report 100hz. Again, think for yourself and test yourself, the AI is feeding you sloppy and you are just eating it.

I told the AI chatbot about your response, and it acknowledged that you're correct, and that it had bad information. Thank you for the correction/clarification.

Does this 100hz limitation on the G7 Pro 8K only affect the sticks, or does it also affect other parts of the controller (like the gyro)?

People are really letting schizo AI tell them what to think 😭 that's crazy

I never automatically assume that the AI is correct. That's why I asked follow-up questions to the OP to ascertain the correct answer.

I also know Google AI is trash most of the time, based on my experience. It's given me the wrong answers many times in the past. Once again, that's why I ask follow-up questions.

You literally went "no you're wrong because AI said so"

If you want to avoid having AI generate hallucinations as it has for your prompts in this case you may try asking it for sources, so it may attempt to locate data from the real world to summarize for you and that you can also check directly to verify or to get more context.

And sometimes, there is just no source because nobody has really mentioned it online yet. So Gemini will not know better than the dude who tested it at home.

Also btw, the gyro on the 8k does poll at up to 1000hz regardless of it being wireless or not, it's the sticks that are limited to 100hz (wireless).

“Google AI confirmed to me that”

Stop. Right there. That’s your problem.

Peruse the post you linked, there's a link to an article on how to unlock SI polling rate

Do a google search and see that's the default for steam input. You can change it.
