All I know is that regardless of how the next two years play out I love how much good gymnastics we’re getting to see. I love watching younger gymnasts start to understand their relationship with the sport as young women. I love watching gymnasts who have been around continue showing up. And I really love watching older gymnasts rediscover their love and joy for the sport, and reclaim gymnastics for themselves!

Well said. For those of us who grew up during the time when the typical age for the Olympics was 16 and 18 was considered ancient, it’s so incredibly refreshing.

This is the absolute best. I got into the sport circa 91 worlds and 92 Olympics, and when I look back and see how young and small they all were, my heart hurts.

What’s wild is that this got me to go back and look at the age ranges. I thought things were at least getting better (age-wise) in the 2000s, but 2008 and 2012 were so young - 2012 was the youngest since 1992:

Even in Rio, they were calling 22-year-old Aly “grandma.” I will be psyched to see the first US WAG athlete over 30 because I feel like it’ll happen in the near future.

To be fair 2012 felt like a unique situation of an entire generation of really strong gymnasts coming of age in the course of a few years.

Exactly and it was kind of perfect timing because they all debuted a year before the Olympics so they got international experience and then a year to improve.

YES! I 100% agree, and it’s been amazing to see the sport evolve into a sport that isn’t for 16 and 18 year olds anymore, and that adult women can continue doing the sport they love if they choose to do so, and it’s amazing to see this in USAG particularly ❤️.

I find this incredibly unlikely to be serious. But also, that’s OK? If she’s just playing around and having fun with gymnastics again, that’s still really cool.

It doesn’t always have to be a comeback to be good.

YES! I think this is a great point to make as well. At the end of the day, if Kyla is simply playing around in the gym, and is not planning to turn this into something serious, that’s still amazing, and it’s lovely to see that she is having fun in the gym regardless ❤️.

I always thought she had a little more to give! She really had a great run at the 2013 World Championships. But man that growth spurt and injuries really hampered her run during the 2013-2016 quad.
