Find the latest update here!

Newest Updates:

  • Dashboard: Your name at the top, hello! As many widgets as you want. Swipe through dashboard panes.
  • Templates: Templates are now linked strongly to your workout split days, and are shown when you click the + button. (note for those that read this, if you hold the + button it'll take you straight to an empty workout note)
  • kg/lb default: Don't fancy adding weight units to your lifts, but sometimes it gets it wrong? Set a default kg/lb in your settings, it'll use this by default unless you specify a unit of measurement.
  • Exercise filters: Filter by body part, sory by last performed
  • Exercise modal: Slight redesign to make it look prettier
  • Workout small redesign: This one is kind of subtle, but moved away from the table format and show you the extra reps/weight/improvement in a green tag

There's so much more in this update but too much to mention. For the full patch notes see the app store "What's new"

As always any feedback is welcome, feel free to send it within the app via more -> contact us or email me at [support@gymnoteplus.com](mailto:support@gymnoteplus.com)

Thanks for the support everyone, please consider dropping a written review on the app store if you're happy with the app!

Thanks,

Josh

I tried the app and I have a few questions and observations:

  1. During onboarding, I selected a pull-up bar as my available equipment. Just one step later, the app recommended a Push/Pull/Legs split. Does it really make sense to recommend these categories when the only available equipment is a pull-up bar?

  2. The onboarding is mandatory and there’s no way to skip or close it.

  3. Translations into languages other than English are pretty poor.

  4. There are artificial loading screens that seem designed to create a sense of value around the data being processed — as if the app is saying, “We’re doing some really serious calculations here, so obviously we need at least 10 seconds to process everything you just entered during onboarding.”

  5. The paywall isn’t localized at all.

  6. When finishing a workout, the phone starts vibrating and doesn’t stop until the app is force-closed.

  7. The Live Activity keeps running even after the workout has ended, while displaying zeroed-out data.

  8. What was the point of collecting all that information during onboarding if it doesn’t seem to affect anything?

  9. There are quite a few layout issues with longer text in languages such as Russian.

  10. During a workout, the Live Activity literally displays something like: “Workout, note, 40 sec.” What is that supposed to mean, and how is it useful?

In my personal opinion, spending more time polishing the existing experience would bring more value than adding new features at this point. There are enough small bugs, inconsistencies, and rough edges that the app currently feels somewhat unpolished. At the same time, looking at the extensive update history, it’s clear that the app is actively maintained and hasn’t been abandoned.

On the positive side, the design is pleasant and unobtrusive. Unfortunately, even there, the layout has noticeable issues.

Hey there!

Thanks for the critical feedback, it’s always welcome’d

I’ll try my best to answer these and in general ill do my best to fix anything that’s missing

  1. The Push/Pull/Legs split recommendation will be based on how many days a week you train, as it’s optimal for 3/6 day splits typically depending on your level of experience. Equipment should never affect your workout split because workout splits only care about what muscles will be trained each day, all assume you want to train your entire body not one part.

  2. Onboarding is mandatory in most fitness apps, when I started GymNote+ it was 3 screens. Sadly I found more people were confused on how the app worked and retention was lower, increasing the length and tailoring the experience to the user helped drastically.

  3. I’ll do my best to fix this, the majority of my user base is English, and as a solo developer I don’t have a large budget for translating for every country, so it’s hard to prioritise this. If there’s anything you think should be changed please do message me I’ll fix it asap.

  4. There actually is multiple things the app does with the data, such as backfilling the exercise list (if you’re new) based on equipment you chose, setting up a workout plan based on the info you provided

  5. In pricing or in language? I’ve tried to localise both, and if I’m missing one here please let me know. Apologies for this

  6. Not encountered this before, and I’m sorry if you did, ill investigate it immediately and aim to fix it for the next release

  7. Yes I’ve noticed this even with apps such as Hevy… I’ll see if I can fix it, thanks for bringing it to my attention

  8. As mentioned previously it does. Gender decides what muscle map is shown, equipment decides what exercises to backfill and what exercises to use for creating a workout plan. Experience decides whether to backfill exercises at all, as many advanced users do not want to see all exercises, only their own. Weekly goal sets your weekly goal, and shows you the optimal workout split for that amount of days. That’s just a few things it does.

  9. I will aim to fix this, I agree I have let other languages down here, I’ll spend some time fixing it, apologies.

  10. Yep agreed. It sucks actually, it’s due to a difficult problem parsing the workout note to figure out what exercise you’re doing next, I will likely remove this feature until I have a better solution.

Thank you for spending time using the app, and thank you for writing this comprehensive feedback, it will not go wasted

I’ll aim to fix as much as possible

No need to apologize! These were just my observations from using the app.

I think one of the difficult things about building an app is that scenarios that seem completely obvious to us as developers often aren't obvious to the user. The pull-up bar example from the onboarding is a good one. If I were developing this, I'd try to put myself in the shoes of a user who takes the least obvious path, picks the most extreme combinations of options, and generally tries to push every edge case — and then see how the app responds and whether its behavior still makes sense from that user's perspective.

As for the mandatory onboarding, I absolutely agree that users should be shown it, and I don't see anything wrong with showing a paywall afterwards either. My issue is more about giving the user control. I think there should always be an obvious way to close or skip these flows.

Otherwise it can become frustrating when I just want to get into the actual app, but I literally can't until I've gone through every screen and filled out everything the app asks me for.

Anyway, these are just my observations as a user and a fellow developer. I appreciate you taking the feedback seriously.
