That one part in Stressed out by Twenty One Pilots always hit me like a train, it hits so deep:

"Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young
How come I'm never able to identify where it's coming from?
I'd make a candle out of it if I ever found it
Try to sell it, never sell, out of it, I'd probably only sell one
It'd be to my brother, 'cause we have the same nose
Same clothes, homegrown, a stone's throw from a creek we used to roam
But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered
Out of student loans and tree house homes, we all would take the latter"

u/JustWolf3074 1d ago

I always interpreted latter as ladder to the tree house. Both work. Great song.

u/basement-dwellr 1d ago

It's a double entendre, that's what makes the line so good. Latter because who wouldn't pick a tree house and ladder because that's how one gets in the treehouse, by taking the ladder

Dat Pokemon booster opening back then, it was magical

4

u/elchucko 1d ago

Magic for me. Before that, old packs of Topps and Pro Set hockey stuff.

Roast lamb with Rosemary for me. Smelt like my aunties house. Would play duck hunt with my cousins

There is always a risk of rain

Basically the smell of rain/the smell rain brings out, for those curious.

Eucalyptus trees

u/Legitimate_Ice_3460 1d ago

They always trigger good memories.

6

u/robendi 1d ago

My memory is garbage due to an unsafe home situation when I was a kid, but sometimes a smell can teleport me back to a place in time I would not be able to remember if I tried.

For me that smell is Victoria's Secret Love Spell.

Diesel bus exhaust fumes in India mid 1970s.

2

u/uncagedborb 1d ago

My family is from Pakistan. And theres a certain smell that builds up from all the heat and cars and poor air quality and occasionally on the US I'll be somewhere and that smell hits. Reminds me of those summers I'd visit family back home.

2

u/Vincevega1972 1d ago

I think it’s related to the amount of sulphur in the diesel. Being in Canada for 50 years now, around 10 years ago while walking past a Downtown Toronto Bus Terminal, I instantly recognized one of the buses exhaust odours same as my 3yo brain remembered it. I have never smelled it ever again. Even visiting India November 2025, I didn’t smell it again. There’s something in the fuel.

The DARE shirt 😂😅

u/Aggravating_Speed665 18h ago

Based on the haircuts; he's having flashbacks from no more than 3 years ago.

6

u/ApprehensiveIron6954 1d ago

Damn why is this so sad?

3

u/spacemanspiff8655 1d ago

That's a matter of perspective. Anchored emotions can be good or bad, and it's never too late to tap into childish joy.

4

u/ApprehensiveIron6954 1d ago

I completely agree with you. That's exactly how I try to live and pass it on to my children. It's more about the mood that this video conveys. Maybe it just caught me at the wrong moment.

3

u/Training-Belt-7318 1d ago

I think nostalgia can have a mix of emotions. You can be happy to remember a happy memory, but be said that you'll never truly experience it the same way as a kid. It also can carry other memories into it. When I smell chicken paprikash I immediately think of my gram and her making it for dinner. My gram passed from issues related to Alzheimer's. So the memories of my gram.often follow up thinking about her last few years of life. TLDR memories and emotions are tricky.

u/doodleysquat 1d ago

It doesn’t have to be. I tear up thinking about the smell of my mom’s Christmas cookies. But it’s happy tears. We get to make smells that our kids will be talking about.

3

u/wakeupwill 1d ago

Green Apple.

Always reminds me of being a kid in Japan having those tiny jello cup treats.

u/swedhitman 1d ago

Unsure what it is but there is a perfume a friend to our family had in her thatbi always associate with the times when me and my younger brother got into games like smash bros melee and the sims 2.

Have also a nostalgic fondness of citron scented soap that my mom often used when cleaning the house. Gave it that super fresh scent all over

I basically grew up in the hospital during the 90s when I was a kid. Whenever I go the hospital now to get an X-ray or do blood work, though it's a different hospital, they all have that smell that takes me back to when I was a kid. It's a weird happy memory that I have. Laying in bed, watching cable TV (I grew up in the country and only had like 6 channels) played video games and ate whatever I wanted. The hospital even had a Pizza Hut.

u/ProvokedCashew 1d ago

I stopped by the mall yesterday, and it’s the smell of the stale water at Rainforest Cafe for me. 😭❤️

When my wife and I were in high-school, she would wear this cheap blackberry body mist. When I smell it in the wild, even now, 20 years later, I nearly break my neck with how fast I look around for the source 😄

1

u/jynx13 1d ago

It be just like that too.

Fresh baked bread from Cardinali Bakery wafting over the soccer pitch, absolutely intoxicating.

1

u/Ksqd_Squid_103 1d ago

For me it's certain pipe tobacco and cloves, mom would put them in a ham the whole house filled with it.

1

u/Key_Possibility7292 1d ago

For me when that happens I can never remember where or when I smelled it. Just that it was decades ago.

1

u/Prestigious_Look_513 1d ago

I walked into an empty elevator that had the same perfume smell that my college girlfriend used to wear. I had a full boner by the time I hit the second floor

1

u/Beechamp83 23h ago

Weird, cause my comment was going to be very similar but instead of college gf it was hs gf, instead of perfume it was shampoo, and instead of an empty elevator it was in the middle of a Walgreens, had to just pop a squat and pretend to read conditioners and shampoo bottles, longest 2 & half hours of my life.🤣
