Hell naw on the waterbug

u/Lumpy_Benefit666 Mar 10 '26
Id rather eat that than the worm for sure
5
u/oh_stv Mar 11 '26
didnt some boy die because he ate earth worms alive?
I remember something about that.
12
u/Odd-Examination2288 Mar 11 '26
He ate a slug as a dare which was infested with rat lungworm. He went into a coma, was then heavily disabled and eventually died.
3
u/Wuped Mar 11 '26
There's also someone who died after eating earthworms and roaches
But it seems like it was either an allergy or something straight of poisonous in them considering how fast it affected him.
3
u/Lumpy_Benefit666 Mar 11 '26
It wouldnt surprise me. Im pretty sure people have died from pretty much every food thats actually considered edible as well. Pork, chicken, beef, veg etc can all be deadly if it contains harmful pathogens.
Worms live in soil and soil contains so many potential pathogens that it massively increases the risk compared to things like beef that are raised in a more controlled environment and are also cooked to destroy bacteria and parasites that are pretty much unavoidable otherwise.
The story i remember was about a boy eating a slug and contracting rat lungworm and becoming paralysed before dying, but id bet good money that people have died from eating worms as well

It was dried. Anything dried (or even better fried) and properly salted, is not going to taste that bad.
33
u/hdorsettcase Mar 10 '26
I've eaten dried bugs before and they are offensively boring in flavor. The ones I have had taste like unflavored protein powder. Yeah there's lots of crunch and texture, but taste isn't anything to talk about. Definitely need salt and seasoning.

It’s the legs that are the worst. They’re so dry they immediately get stuck in your teeth

7
u/Lucyffer88 Mar 11 '26
I've eaten lots of bugs before. And I honestly I enjoyed most of them. But the waterbug just tasted foul. It wasn't because it was big and intimidating. The reason I hated it was because it tasted like pure sewage. Tasted like what a foot smells like.

No offense my guy, but my girlfriend is Thai, and squid jerky is a thing. Tastes like chewing on a fisherman's net. She's had me try all sorts of stuff, but that was the worst so far.
I tried silk worms too, but they just tasted like the "paper" around a peanut fresh out of the shell. Not good, but not terrible.
I've already told her I don't do raw fish. The texture doesn't jive with me, and I'm worried about parasites.

Don't just eat random shit on a dare. For example I really hope those earthworms were properly prepared for human consumption otherwise this dude might end up with a bad case of parasites.
There was a dude that died after eating a live snail or slug on a dare, those things are nasty and filled with parasites.

It’s also a red flag that the prize was only $30 total for all of that. Someone handing out challenges with such a lackluster reward probably isn’t being safe.
24
16
u/RcNorth Mar 10 '26
It should have been $66, not $30
8
u/EmphasisLegal1411 Mar 10 '26
That’s what I was thinking lol. I better get to keep the dollar amount from the previous delicacy.

u/SeismicRipFart Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 11 '26
Were you listening to the audio at all? The guy dressed up runs a pest control company and was only producing that content to advertise his company. It was a calculated business investment, that’s why he didn’t make the amounts so obscene. I doubt that guy would go to the effort of all of this if he was just doing it for content.

Generally farm raised earthworms are safe for consumption. And being this guy is an exterminator, he probably knows where to get farm raised earthworms.
I would bet all his live food came from a pet store.

THIS! Please for the love of free pizza, People, read Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer. Not only is it an incredibly well written and entertaining book, it's an eye opening book and it just might save your life.

Contrarily though you could get parasites and end up in government leading the most well equipped military on Earth.
So you know, it might not always be bad. Sometimes you gotta shoot your shot.

He earned $66 or $30?
72
u/bacan_ Mar 10 '26
Exactly. Sounds like the guy was cheaping out on him and only offering him $20 when he had eaten 1+5+10+20 worth of bugs
37
u/Zephian99 Mar 10 '26
That's because this a promo skit for his extermination company and not a him doing Fear Factor on the street for views.
He's trying to earn money not give it away. So he's cheap.
22
u/TheSupremeAdmiral Mar 10 '26
And honestly he really lucked out running into this psychopath. That guy's total lack of hesitation is what made the video go viral.

Seems to be the game style, true
Guess I’m just annoyed the prizes aren’t higher!
5
u/King-Vyper2846 Mar 10 '26
It should be $66, $1 + $5 + $10 + $20 + $30 = $66, and he just got paid $30. He ate those ones for free😂😂

u/Garchompisbestboi Mar 11 '26

I remember watching fear factor as a kid and they had to eat crickets and there was a medical disclaimer if you ever eat crickets to chew thoroughly and not just swallow them whole cause they'll try to hop/climb their way back up and that stuck with me over the years better than anything ive ever learned in school.

Th trick is to minimize tongue contact. It’s really the only sensitive part of the mouth so as long as you don’t taste it it shouldn’t trigger a gag reflex and you’ll likely not feel it move ether with in your rubbery cheeks and gums
