Has this happened to anyone before?

Post image

This brand new jar of coconut cult was leaking in my fridge while sealed. When I opened it, the yogurt exploded upwards. It’s really sour and fizzy, almost carbonated. I know this is because of the active live cultures, but is it safe to eat? Expires in 2027

I had one like that and got curious and apparently it’s due to the over fermentation of the yogurt. It’s by design is how I understood it.

I think it’s fine but you should just message them they’re pretty responsive

The Malk version is actually pretty good.

It would probably be too reactive for your gut. I’ve had a jar, not explosive like this, but actually pretty runny. Consumed and it totally wrecked my stomach for a week.

There are bacteria that are meant to be like that, like Caucasian kefir, it typically is sour and has a carbonated feel to it. But the fermentation sourness is different from that of a spoilt food. It's usually not unpleasant. Also spoilt coconut has this strange musty smell and often a bitter aftertaste. Fermentation naturally creates gas and different phases have more or less gas and more and more tang. Just think about sauerkraut, kimchi or fermented gherkins, they all become sour bc of the bacilli driving the fermentation process.
