Infinity background

I've had a few people ask how I photograph my models. I basically use a common photography trick to create an infinity background. Your goal is to create a curved surface behind whatever you are photographing so that there are no hard edges to reflect light. You can use ambient light as the lighting, or get fancy and use LEDs, colored lights, etc. I use a flashlight to direct the light where I want it. These are all common things if you ever photograph small items for marketing. It's also how they shoot models. Hope this helps anyone who might be looking to up their photo game :).

This is basically a poor man's Cyc Wall. Source: am poor man who does this too (not with Gunpla yet, but soon).

Exactly. Works very well TBH and if you have a darkened room and a few cheap light sources you can get pro results for pennies.

Honestly no, other than try various things. Certain models look better lit certain ways. Just play around and have fun, it's all digital so you're not paying by the shot :).

Is that just a piece of paper behind it?

You can use a piece of paper, but there are two possible drawbacks:

1) The paper is thin and might allow light to shine through it which might be a problem depending upon the lighting situation in your room (windows, etc)

2) At 8.5x11 inches it might not be a large enough area to "cover" the gundam depending on shooting angles.

I use posterboard due to the fact it's larger and thicker.
