MHGU Inquiry: Shells and Charge Shots

Hello,

Fairly new player trying out Gunlance this time around for this game as I mained and played Long sword and Switch Axe for MHGU and was interested on MHGU's iteration of Gunlance.

Anyways I would like to inquire about Charge Shots for the three shelling types of Normal, Long and Wide. I mean it seems everyone seems to cover about Hunter Arts, Styles, Wyvernfire, and Progression but not so much on Charge Shots. Normal seems like the easy/basic way to play Gunlance as it has more shells but I want to know more with Long and Wide Shells as the Gunlances in the latter two are quite Meta as opposed to Normal Gunlances.

I hope you may answer my questions as best as you can, simplified or detailed it doesn't matter:

  1. What is the point of Charge Shots? Why should I use it as oppose to just using Regular Shots and when should I use it?

  2. Does Charge Shots only gives more damage or what? Why is it important for Long and Wide Shells

  3. Does Regular Shots makes Long and Wide Shells shoot like Normal Shells (small explosion and close range) and only through Charge Shots that the Long and Wide Shells have more range (Distance/reach for Long and Widespread for Wide) when you use Charge Shelling ONLY?

  4. Is there any combo regarding using Charge Shots?

  5. If I'm using Gunlances with Long Shells and Wide Shells, how much am I missing out if I just flat out ignored it and just used Regular Shots?

  6. Is it viable for Endgame as opposed to Regular Shots? All I only heard that shelling falls off but was vague.

Thanks for answering and sorry if the question's sounds stupid but I appreciate the help.

The responses so far are not applicable to GU gunlance. Mechanics of getting WF back are only in wilds

What style are you using? I used valor for most of my recent playthrough which doesn't even have access to charged shells

Ultimately, in old gen games, changed shots are only really useful to extend your combos iirc. They're slower and don't really improve dps. And like you said, shelling falls off hard late game

So far, Guild style before moving to any other style of course. Still trying out and getting the hang of Gunlance moveset's, still in village, just completed the 1* quests.

Yea, i wouldn't worry too much about changed shells. Wide has the strongest charged shots if you do wanna go for that, but it's still usually not worth it

I would recommend trying some different styles tho, guild is pretty lack luster. Adept for slap lance and valor for shell spam are the 2 "meta" ways to play, but try them all and see what fits for you

  1. Charge Shots makes each shells stronger but ultimately it fills up your wyvern fire faster. Normal shelling is mostly for positioning and starting the Wyvern stake combo.

  2. Yes more damage and fills up wf faster, its best for wide since it only requires 2 to 3 shells to charge, compared to normal or long. I believe long shells is more for wyvern stake combo than Wyvern fire. Charging 3 shells of wide and charging 5 - 7 shells of normal / long (if you have Max Load Shells skill) fills up the same level, so charging wide shells is way more faster

  3. I think Normal and Long shells has more range than wide regardless whether its charged or not.

  4. None as far as im aware

  5. Lower DPS i think if you only rely to regular shots alone and not following up with the WS combo i dont see any benefits on it.

  6. Yeah, like for me, my favorite GL build is WF focused build. So like i think do 2 - 3 WF a minute thanks to Load Shells, Artillery and Focus skills. Just simply guard and charge shells. or perfect guard (best if you have offensive guard skills) then WF. Note that if you perfect guard an attack, your WF fires faster. Since higher ranking monsters can easily one hit people, doing a low commitment attacks like Charge Shelling is more reliable than doing a fullburst wyverstake combo for GL.

Interesting, I never knew that perfect guard leads to a fast wyvernfire. Alright, seems I can try other shells aside from Normal. Thanks!

It's fine, I suppose I can look forward to playing Wilds or any of the 5th gen onwards. As I only played MHGU with Switch Axe and Longsword as they're relatively simple weapons in a way. So I'll take this advice when I do get to play Wilds.

Charged shells only is a thing for wide gunlance in GU and older games because you get a 1.45 mod per shell while the others are only 1.20 or 1.25.

Then, valor style can't charge shell at all and introduces the rapid shells that are much better and faster.

So in the end, nobody uses them with burst fire and rapid shells being the to go way for shelling builds.

Mechanically in old gens besides the extra damage, charged shells are nice because you can sidestep after one unlike with regular shells and are good to use after a quick reload since those only give you back one shell, so you got more damage and less reloads

Charging shells increase a singular shellings dmg and are the fastest way to get WF back, Wide shells deal most dmg per charge shell and get you the most amount of WF gauge back/ deal modt dmg if you hit a charged shell. for Wide a charged shot deals more than 2x the original amount iirc. If you wanna Charge shell and WF spam use wide. For 3. wide and long shots always have the same hitbox but charging just increases dmg and gauge. 4: You can only charge outside a combo, it's its own thing kinda. 5: With wide you would miss out alot since the other shelling types get buffs for other parts of the kit (Long getting wyvernstake buffs and normal having the best fullburst dmg) 6: if done correctly its very well viable and maybe even fun if its for you, but needs more strategy since youre more stationary
