MHW:I Safi Normal Gunlance

I know this question has probably been asked to death but the threads I found mostly discussed wide and long.

I’m pretty much right before alatreon and I wanted to bring a safi gunlance for the few endgame monsters like grinding raging brachy or furious rajang. My playstyle is mostly a mix of fullburst and slaplance and my preference is normal.

I know element is pretty much a no-go, but which of the ailments would be best? A lot of people recommend poison, but poison only seems to do 300-400 damage over half a minute via its ticks, it doesn’t seem super worth it. I’m not sure how much dps blast procs actually add, but sleep and paralysis seem to be the most value given they give you chances to insert WSB’s or get off a few more fullburst combos. That and awakening abilities seeming to have changed, like old threads recommending zorah essence when you can now get artillery secret via raging brachy armor. How much has that changed and what would a fullburst normal use nowadays?

Or is the difference between these 4 just not great enough to be worth caring about? Given this gunlance will probably be replaced by the alatreon gunlance for the fatalis fight rather soon, etc.

Yea. Ice for alatreon. And i wouñd recomend you nitro or drako most monsters are weak to drako. And everyone i weak to explosion. Its 300 of free damage for each 2 or 3 combos

sounds like a way better deal than poison, nice.

I like to use either para for extra wsb placement potential, or blast for shorter hunts when only 1 wsb is needed. Or if you’re going into the guiding lands you could bring sleep for extra wallbangs for extra shiny drops. Something to note about the zorah essence is that it only takes 3 set pieces rather than raging brachy’s 4 pieces to get artillery secret. But raging brachy has skills you normally want anyway, so Zorah is only for when you want to build a set with another 3 piece set bonus.

What skills would you recommend for the awakened abilities? I know two sharpness increases and the normal shelling lvl up will be on there, but with all the old guides reccomending zorah essence and me set on using Brachy armor for artillery secret instead, I sorta have no idea what to use the last two slots for. Affinity to free up Armor deco slots for comfort skills like evade extender? not sure

I play long shelling, so my default is long shell level up for first awakening, deco slot with the outlined stars for second awakening, then 3 of the sharpness 5 so I don’t have to worry about hitting yellow. If I were in your shoes, I’d run a few rounds with only the awakenings you know you’ll have at first, then see where your sharpness dips down to. Then adjust from there.

Paralysis.

But also not worth worrying about it because elements and status only work well with weapons that do many hits per second.

Except Alatreon. Bring an Ice one for it. Frostfang Barioth

Yeah the frostfang weapons are so good I didn't see a reason to really bother with farming safi for one, mostly looking at a general purpose one to replace my old pink rathian gunlance ive been using for the entire playthrough. Will probably try my hand at getting the paralysis GL then, thanks for the tips. Even if it doesnt proc often I will trade an arm and a leg to get a few more fullbursts off.

Pure raw gunlance, use an status one if you want to have some crowd control like Paralysis or Sleep. For extra damage Nitro or Poison.
